The SSVC Forum and Facebook (again)

by nige1171 » Thu Apr 16, 2015 10:09 am
I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that it must be easier/quicker getting technical queries answered outside of this forum :(

I've been reluctant to join Facebook for years (and for many reasons) but find myself considering it now as the traffic here seems to have declined significantly over the last couple of years. I'm not interested in finding old school mates or seeing what they had for dinner last night but feel I am missing out on lots of interesting debates etc on the SSVC Facebook page.

The build threads are great here and of course you have the ability to search for old technical topics etc but if you're getting stuck with something over a weekend and need some quick/instant reassurance or guidance then I find users just don't bother logging on here as much to offer help. I hear that's the difference with FB?

Everyone's got Facebook on their smartphones etc so I guess it's natural to expect more traffic through there eventually.

Is it time I joined the 21st century????

I have the Tapatalk forum app on my phone and tablet and log in to keep an eye on things through the week/day the same as most people do with Facebook.

Im an avid hater of Facebook so it will be a shame if the above is true. The app provides a nice option and its available on IOS and Android... Might be worth the club making it more known to sway the balance of the above the other way? Or is there a plugin for the forum available to make the facebook feed available at all, worth asking the admin guys? There has to be another option!!

I'm with you Wejjy.

I feel like I've resisted FB this long, why can't I continue to ignore it

I was just looking at the bottom of the Board Index page earlier and it said there were circa 20 members online and the most popular day was back in 2007 with 300 members logged in at once

My kids have warned me I'm becoming an old grumpy git

(Is 43 old these days??) No need to answer that!!!!!

'Er yep, according to my kids!!!!

Agreed, it is slow in here these days and I too wondered if it was due to FB, or perhaps a lot of people are busy trying to get their van ready for the forth coming season?

A slow forum could become an endangered forum, but on the flip, side a slower forum may also mean a gentle forum.

Pro's and Con's of a FB page, but I'm sticking with the forum thanks. :D

I'm new to SSVC but I've already noticed how much busier Facebook is.

I've been a long time user of FB, although I did stop using it about a year or so ago.

Due to SSVC I now have a tab permanently open on the SSVC group all day and I refresh it every hour or so.

You don't have to connect to anyone else if you join FB, so just join the SSVC group and think of it as an alternative SSVC forum, and nothing else.

I'm 43 too, must be something to do with splitscreens?

Have to say I flick between the forum and Facebook, trouble with Facebook is that things disappear so quickly but for instant technical responses it does work.

(Edited, I forgot how old I was, guess I must be too old or it was wishful thinking)

Im 32 and cant stand it, don't think its age related as Im super into my Tech, just a personal aversion to anything social media related [emoji12], just don't buy into it. The less people knowing what I had for dinner or when and where I went on holiday the better.

Although after re-reading that, I am definitely grumpy [emoji5]️

I do find it good for quick answers, had a few westy related questions so asked on a westy page with pics and had an answer within a few mins, you don't need photobucket etc either

Just to let you know I've had grilled salmon with new potatoes, carrots and a bottle of red, the red was in a glass not on the same plate.
Managed to load up the car with interior panels ready to be recovered tomorrow, didn't make it out to the garage but watched a load of crap on tv and caught up with ssvc on Facebook and on here.......lol

I'm 40 something

What annoys me is owners not buying a manual, which would save then money and answer the basic questions, and/or not bothering to use the search function so the same questions get asked over and over endlessly.

I've recently joined FB very reluctantly :? and definately not under my own name :? and strictly for splitscreen only :) .....The traffic the SSVC FB page gets should generate more traffic here  .....unfortunately in does not and the forum is dead which is such a shame :(

The amount of parts for sale on FB outstrips Ebay and this forum......only wish I released that a few years ago

Everything moves on as we all know but I really wish something could be done to save this searchable knowledgable and great resource that is the SSVC forum....time will tell....FB is not for me but I've been forced to use it

I was going to bring this up at the AGM but you cannot fight progress

EDIT to add
Ian aged 45 3/4 who loves tech....but is not remotely interested in beheading and other peoples porn kicks which still appear on FB even though I choose friend requests carefully......it will ruin the kids of today....rant over

At 43, you're all mere youngsters, and 32, well……

I don't use Facebook much and don't see the need to document my life on the internet.

I will continue to do my thread here though, which is not my norm, as I want to be able to look back when Rusty is finished. I'll stick with the forum, but do look at FB every so often.

Mary uses FB a lot, but most of her buddies are in Oz and it works well because of the time difference.

A link whereby new threads/replies on the forum appear on FB might be useful?

Just my thoughts

I was nearly put off from reading this thread by the title but am glad I did!!

Being female and not wanting to exactly shout about my age (those that know me might have guessed which big one I am heading for this summer!). I like to follow what is going on within the membership of the SSVC and VW enthusiasts in general. If I have something useful to offer then I will try to share and help wherever I can.
I use both the SSVC forum and FB.

Some interesting comments have been made here Nige :)

See you at VF hopefully
