Classic beetle as daily driver -mid life crisis or good idea

by Rock Bus » Wed Mar 18, 2015 7:37 pm
I'm thinking of going back to having a classic beetle as a daily driver am I mad?
Had one when I was young and child free but now in my forties and with 3 kids have a hankering to have one again (mid life crisis!?!).
Got the split screen van which we use for weekends and fun but would love to drive a beetle again.

Wife's megane is becoming a money pit so thinking about letting her have my Mazda and me having a beetle for short runs to work and weekend local trips.

Am I crazy and how much would a decent, solid and reliable one cost me (if they exist!!!)

Ps and if any one knows a suitable vehicle would appreciate a heads up!

I did the same thing , My 64 Beetle is cheap on juice , cheap to insure , and most important , fun. You can fix most things yourself if anything goes wrong and if it doesn't work out just sell it and get your money back . Nothing to lose! Summers coming do it !

As I said on volksmoan, rather you than me
But if you must then do it for the summer when it's fun then buy a cheap 300 quid hack for the winter. And make sure you join the RAC.....

Cheers, Lee.

Agreed, summer is fine. But winter is when it gets tough.

Do it!
I had a beetle as a daily driver for 6 years, all year round. Apart from having to scrape the INSIDE of the window regular in the winter, it was great fun. 1300 well looked after got me about 30 mpg and hundreds of smiles per gallon which, ultimately, is what driving should be all about.
I say again, do it!

Do it, keep it standard though so it is comfy, reliable & useable, and get an old shed of a car for the winter as said above, no fun scraping ice every morning off the inside of the screen

Oh and AA/RAC etc is a must (just in case your boss is not understanding of old cars...!)

Cheers guys, knew I could rely on you lot to egg me on rather than going on about practicalities!!

Got the wife's sanction so now just need to find right car...appreciate it if you can keep your eyes peeled for me.

Definitely do it! I used a stock LHD '54 in all weathers, summer and winter and it never let me down. It was toasty warm and super comfy and is now retired from regular service to avoid wearing it out!

I've had no end of trouble with modern cars and not had any real problems with beetles or splits. You're looking at £3k these days for a half decent bug though. As above comments, life is too short, just do it
