Favourite places in Spain & Portugal?
by vwJim » Sun Mar 27, 2016 7:37 pm
Starting to think about this year's road trip....
Anyone got any favourite spots in Spain or Portugal. We'll be doing our usual thing of pottering around and staying off any major roads, though it is always good to have recommendations for places to visit, or even areas to not waste time on.
Thanks.

I watched some of the Spainish version of the Tour de France last year and got a few ideas of historic areas.

Did Spain and Portugal a few years ago in a caravan.
We drove west from Santander along the Northern Spanish coastline. Nice quiet beaches and very chilled. Lots of surfing if you're in to that.
We then drove South down the coast of Portugal. Viana do Castelo, Espinho and Aveiro were all quite memorable places.
Avoid the Algave in peak season. It's absolutely heaving and overpriced compared to other places.
We drove up through the middle of Spain. Burgos and Pamplona are a must even if you're not into bull torture. Sitting in a Spanish bar during the day with a glass of wine and some Serrano ham and I was in heaven.
We found that Spain was nice in the cities but there wasn't much to see in between like you would find in small french villages.
Never saw the south of Spain so cant help there.
Great trip. Hope you have a great time.

If you want to go south then Andalusia has a few lovely spots. Rhonda, el chorro , Alhambra, mosque/church in Córdoba.cave in nerja and even Malaga town is pretty with a free Picasso museum.
Almost forgot to add El Torcal de Antequera nature park. Good spot for eagle spotting too!

Jim,
It's nothing to do with Le Tour, but it is the third most prestigious after the Giro

Yes, I know, but figured everyone would know what "Spanish version of Le Tour" was, but some would not know what the La Vuelta was.

Wrong month for us, but the town looks like a worthwhile stop over.

We used the "France Passion" scheme with great success on a previous trip, looks like there is a Spanish version, so will be doing a little research on how well it's supported.
