any beetle experts on here?
any beetle experts on here?
by Chewie Baker » Wed May 04, 2016 1:52 pm
Got a 'C' registered 1965 beetle that i'm going to resurrect thats been in the family since the late 80's, but digging out the log book over the weekend i noticed the chassis number dates to early August 1962
Log book says first registered in UK 21st June '65
Would it have sat around in Germany or a UK showroom for a couple of years?
or would there be another reason why it wasn't registered for the first 22 months of its life?
cheers - Martin

It may well have been owned by a serviceman in Germany from new and then brought back to the UK when his posting finished.
The car would have been given the current plate when it was registered here, so if it entered the country in 1965 it would have been given a C plate.

hello Paul and good to hear you
Spoke to the ex wife last night who is only the 2nd owner and that is exactly what happened with the first owner.
He came back from his posting in Germany in '65 and brought the beetle with him
Nice bit of history

62 would be a small window bug and 65 a larger window. Have a look at the side windows above the waist.

Look at the side window, my old 64 was the last of the small window bugs...
Post August 64 they're bigger...

Easy way to tell is the front quarterlight. Up to 1964 has an upright quarterlight, 1965 onwards has an angled quarter light.
