Hi, I'm looking for some advice on garage doors. I need to get a bit more head hight when my garage door is open. I have a conventional up and over metal door, which takes about 8cm from the top of the door frame when open. I need those 8cm to fit a bus shaped object through. I've looked at sectional doors that could give me full clearance through the door, but the ones I've seen seem to need more internal head height than I have. The door opening height is 210cm with only 21cm on the inside from the top of the opening to the ceiling. Swing out doors are an option, but will take some of the limited width I have. Any thoughts? Roller shutter doors do require some head room, but varies greatly between manufacturers.

Swing out doors are good, except on windy days.

Hard to say without seeing the set up you have now. Would it be possible to fit a frame to the face of the existing opening allowing you to fit swing doors without taking anything off the width? How about a sliding or concertina door that goes to one side?

I took the up and over door and all the bits off and put some big hinges on the door.
My garage door is now hinged to give me the headroom for my stock height bus.

Thanks for the feedback. I like Dougal's idea, If I can't find a suitable sectional/roller type door, that could be a good option.

Hahahahaha!

I managed to move my up n over door UP in the frame - as it had extra bits overhead to pack out & fit the frame from the joists/brickwork - so I removed the overhead bits and moved the whole frame up - I had to add a bit to the bottom of the door, but when its all painted you can't tell.
I only raised it by about 2" but it was enough.

Dropped spindles are way cooler and give 3.5”

We've got a sectional door which is fitted with a low headroom kit. What this is is a set of extra runners that rollers of the top panel sit in. It's a bit hard to explain, I could take a couple of pic's if you wanted.

Hi, can I ask what make of door you have, or from whom you got it? I've found one that requires much less headroom, if you don't go for the motorised opener, but it still needs a smidge too much, maybe the low headroom kit is the way to go. Thanks

It's a Hormann, supplied by a local company as it was an insurance claim. My stock height bus went in no problem when I bought it.
