Bertha and Wall-e do France
by subwestyjon » Thu Aug 19, 2010 12:44 pm
One week before both vans had gearbox's out and two engines Bertha had to go back to the old reliable 1500 as the 1914 was broke, but Wall-e's power plant was all good after a flywheel oil seal, new clutch, and a butty's mid gearbox mount.
Plan was to go through france down to the bottom then to Soustons for a vw show on the west coast and back up home.
The first issue we had was when we got to Poole harbour Condor ferries decided to send the ferry of to France an hour early, meaning we had to drive up to Portsmouth to get an over night ferry going to Saint Malo. Had to do a little bit of gearbox mount tightening and then we scrapped onto the ferry.
Once of the ferry we headed straight for Limoges we stopped for a couple of nights in a place called Oradour where the German SS had gone into the town in the war and killed all of the villagers then burnt all of their houses. It was a very strange place, lots of cool cars tho.
We then headed off to Saint Cirq LaPopie a very cool medieval village, and spent the night down by the river after eating far too much duck.

Then we moved down south of Toulouse and stopped off at an Airstream trailer park, ( www.airstreameurope.com ) was very cool really nice guy called Perry and his wife who used to travel with their circus. The campsite has got their old touring vans and buses parked up. Also a 10 discount if you turn up in a classic car. Cant recommend the place enough!!!

It was then time to head to the coast and found a scrapyard on the way with loads of old trucks unfortunately no Vdubs. We spent five days chilling around Leucate and Gruissan.
A westy caravan we spotted looked in really good condition they weren't in to make an offer which sucked!!!
A friend of Leons called Airstream Dave told us about a beetle he had seen in Gruissan so we went on a hunt in the morning to find it and we did. The owner was really cool and invited us in for a beer, we managed to communicate with some bad french and english. He had had the beetle for fourteen years when the hub nut fell off then sat ever since unfortunately it was way too gone to be rescued.

Cheers for the comments guys. Just left the show yesterday will get some pics up when we get a chance. We never really book anywhere the airstream will be the only camp site we stay on. We always use the aire du camping areas they have here in france, normally free if not about 8 euros a night. They all have a toilet if not a shower as well.
