To Chrome or not to Chrome?

To Chrome or not to Chrome?

by ducatis » Tue Feb 19, 2013 6:45 am
This is an age old question but I'm looking for upto date advice..

I have my beloved Angel bus - 66 21 window soon to be out of paint shop :-).
A fantastic job by MidlandPaintWerks - thankyou Stuart and Drew

Like a lot of these things her 'fix' became a full blown resto. Originally I thought about re-using all the original door latches and handles.....Which all work fine....

Problem is against the now 'new' bus they just dont look good enough, on closer inspection they have that typical pitting/pock marks that you see on old chromed pieces. It clearly would of affected the base metal in places :-(

So my problem is do I look to get them re chromed which would require taking the base metal back to a smooth surface before re plating. I'm not sure it is cost effective? How close to original are modern re pro's of these parts? Who does the 'best' ones?

Any thoughts welcome - if posted in wrong section apologies to moderator :-)

She has her own folder on my Facebook page, 65 deluxe has her
welding work on here and MidlandPaintWerks have her on their Facebook page

as a side question does anyone have some ratty 60/40 front seats?
I also have some new in the box CE safari's unpainted, I now want to go Stainless Steel, anyone want to swap?

thanks for reading

Without doubt find a good chrome plating company and get the OG lot re chromed. That way they will fit when you put them back on. So much repro stuff just doesn't fit right.

Good quality chroming will last. It Works out about the same as buying a repro replacement part for part.

I used Vernon Moss chroming 01484 710153

chrome the og stuff...mistake i made was they had a £50 min-charge so in all it cost about £110 for one cab door handle and base, both cargo door handles and tailgate T handle and all three collars...think it would have been cheaper if i hadnt done it in 2 batches.....

I used Vernon Moss, I got Sooty onto them a few years back.

The chrome still looks as good now as it did when I got them back in 2011.
