Roadside Recovery - Are you sure you're covered?

Roadside Recovery - Are you sure you're covered?

by dubberdean » Fri Aug 23, 2013 11:47 am
Just had this conversation with RAC -

Dean: Basically I would like to be covered across UK and Europe, with the option of being taken to a garage of my choice or home
Dean: what level would that be?
Gavin: ok, how old are the vehicle's that you would take into Europe ?
Dean: 50 years old
Dean: 1964 is the oldest
Gavin: ok, you will need to call our travel team for this, cover online for Europe is restricted to vehicles under 11 years old
Gavin: RAC European Travel Sales team can be contacted on 0800 550 055
Dean: that's great Gavin, thanks

Just wanted to make sure that no-one had taken out PERSONAL COVER thinking they would be covered no matter what the vehicle only to be potentially left stranded in Europe!

On AA website - http://www.theaa.com/breakdown-cover/eu ... iew%3Dtab1

Vehicles covered

AA European breakdown cover can be used for private cars, hire cars, motorbikes (over 200cc) and light vans of any age. With Lite and full cover, you can also cover campervans, motor caravans and minibuses.

Some restrictions apply, however, in order to make sure your vehicle will fit onto a recovery transporter:

Maximum weight: 3.5 tonnes (3500kgs) gross vehicle laden weight
Maximum length: 7m (23ft)
Maximum width: 2.3m (7ft 6in)
Maximum height: 3m (9ft 10in)

AA won't cover multiple vehicles abroad, so if like me you're fortunate enough to own more than one vehicle that you might want to take abroad in any given 12 month period then you'd have to take out a policy per vehicle. Crazy.

Unless its changed, the AA won't cover ANY modifications in Europe either, and that even means the colour! So watch out.

Try together insurance a Vw specialist, post up what they do and how much it is (think its. £80 for a years cover) that includes everything.

With the AA age is not a problem but it sent my year cover from £160 to £290. they recovered it and didn't mention colour or any changes. I suppose as its standard height they didn't look into it.

RH insurance provide full European breakdown cover alongside their full comp policies.

I know the premium will differ with the risk of the individual, but my entire premium is under £200 including breakdown.

Anyone had to use their breakdown cover either here or abroad?

Hope this helps.

Hi

My 56 is about £128 a year on a limited to 3000 miles policy with Lancaster insurance. That includes breakdown and agreed value and they know ever single little mod. I popped two tyres on the way back from hessisch (in the UK at that point) and was very pleased with the service. less than 45 mins to get to us and a quick and painless recovery straight onto a flatbed. No messing 8)
