The S.A. plate is on the wheel tubs usually..
Just wondering if it MAY be under any wheel tubs mats...
S.A. fitted their own VIN plates...

I can't remember if its SA or Brazilian buses, but IF the rust or crash damaged the original VIN stamping the licencing authority allowed a new stamping of the original VIN number under the driver's seat.

I have owned multiple SA built busses, the vin plate has always been on the bulkhead behind the drivers seat on split & bay busses. A CKD bus will also have the SA issued M plate that is quite different to a German bus. The engine bay stamping in a CKD bus is the same as a German bus.

If it's a fleetline totally different story.

I have seen busses with numbers as above, normally on scrapped busses due to accident or registration duty many years over due.

As Jim says I have also seen many fleetlines disguised or trying to be sold as early busses.

The 'manufacture' date on a SA reg document is quite often wrong. Similar I guess to many busses UK registered many years ago.

Pass. It's got late split features and the '67-only' radio delete plate on the dashboard, but I don't know whether post-67 South African or Brazilian splits had that plate. The dusty-conditions air cleaner bracket on the RH side of the engine bay stick out as it not being a typical German build, but that might be standard for a SA bus? Can't tell from the photos whether the engine vents are 'innies' or 'outies', but that change was in the early '60s anyhow.

Have you had a scrape around where the VIN should be stamped in the engine bay to see if it was filled over by whoever painted it?

If you want a better answer, I'd recommend that you repeat the question and pictures on The Samba. There are guys on there who could give you a much better answer based on the photos. Or maybe Google to see if there is a South African split forum.

Thanks for your reply, Yeah ill take some better pictures as soon as the van returns ( its currently having a new floor fitted) Yeah thats for the Oil air filter. Always on the look out for one. The Engine vents are innies.

Yeah i've had a good look ( so has the welder) and apparently its been removed. Area bodged over! I've uploaded the question onto The Samba and a South African air cooled website.

Saw your post on The Samba. That triggered a memory, so I did a find on the FAQs page. They have a thread about '67-only features... 67-only features

If you can find thosefeatures, they might at least give you an argument that could convince an inspector, if DVLA can give you an option to present the case.
