Tis true, that another totally non VW related driver did stop, to see if he could help but his opening line was " Hi mate, i know nothing about cars but......."! and he left in a couple of minutes.

I'm thinking we might be getting our wires crossed here Lucky... The split we saw was not long from Jc 9 of the M25, and when we passed there was another bus pulled in behind, a Baywindow I think, and things looked under control... we figured as another VW had stopped things were hopefully OK... Was this you? We might have passed a totally different broken down Split... :?

..well...i really should write my own thread , but i'll leech onto here if that's ok..

..not 20 mins after YOUR breakdown, Rikki rescued me !

..(story)..haven't driven the van for a while , so a couple of weeks ago i 'tuned' the emgine , retimed iit & fitted a new idle jet.
I had a catastrophic Friday, which i won't bore you with, but suffice to say , when i got out on the road at last, in the driving rain, i had to cane it!The bus didn't seem to be running right, but i had to press on apace..i had put £35 of gas in at home( already had 10lits)..so when, after @ 80 miles it coughed & spluttered to a halt just after the junc of the M25/M23 i was more than a little surprised- READ FUMING MAD!! ...
so i stood at the side of the M23 in the rain muttering obscenities to myself & watching the cars, inc 2 Bays, drive past- then a Bay pulled up - lovely guy, very helpful ( not a Scooby what his name was, now, tho  ) who didn't have any fuel, so eventually had to go on his way. I decided to Ring THE MIGHTY SAUSAGE FINGERS & ask if he knew of anyone passing & he told me Rikki should be in the vicinity...
A brief call later & Iron man Rikki rolls up with a cheery handshake & a can of gas :D :D :D :D ..
Not happy with that, he then escorts me to Pease Pottage for safety & then down to Brighton , for the fun of a cruise!
WHAT A STAR!! :D 8)
..ps..sorted the idle jet prob Sun morn.. :D
pps..as i filled up with Rikkis can , at the side of the M23, the only Police vehicle i saw all night reversed up to investigate!!

Mike i was never out to cast blame on anyone but merely to praise Rikki.
There could be circumstances where i would not stop, but thankfully this has never been the case so far although i freely admit that there have been people that i have been unable to help but i did try.
If like you i saw a bus had stopped and they looked ok, then knowing i had my daughter and wife onboard, i too would have considered not stopping, it's a decision made on the spot like you said before.
In this case it was not me that you saw, so relax, i was literally 3-4 miles from hook, just before the big pub on the left, which indecently reminds me that after Rikki had helped us into the lay-by next to the pub and then had gone on his way, 2 more buses pulled into the pub and went for dinner :-( :-) :-D
