Here are the parts amassed so far
1.
2.
3.
Doh! I've not got anything yet but on a more sensible note I'm working by this thread

cost so far:
£50 steering rack & shipping
£30 saxo pas pump
£20 hydraulic hose
£12 17mm steering shaft beaing
£10 t25 relay box
£10 vectra steering column uj
£5 all fixing nuts & bolts required
£137 so far
i had the mk2 golf lower column uj,steel work, paint etc kicking about in the lockup so that didnt cost anything but might have cost another £20 or so if i had to buy it and i still have to pay for the machine work on the steering arms, if you didnt want power assistance you could easily knock £50 of straight away for the pump and hose? but i figured while i was rack and pinion'ing i may as well go power
As I start I'll be updating my panel thread in the projects bit here

Went to their site. Quote of interest:
Valley Gas own VW split screen camper steering rack conversion, get you bus flat on the floor, get rid of the worn out box and raise clearance the floor you won't believe how low you can go £1100 steel (also available in stainless).

Hi Guys mark hopley gingersbuses, yes are new bolt on kit is being road tested now, i drove ians van today right hand drive panel and its fantastic. he s running 5 1/2 mengles on 3 1/2 dropped spindles, it super smooth, very light (slightly lighter than my mk4 golf) lighter than stock for parking (not any different than it is driving) no tracking/tramming, self centers, and the horn works as it should the wire comes out behind the column just above the cab floor.
Ian built his 12 yrs ago and it was vauxhaul astra based as is mine(he s knackerd one tie rod end in 12 yrs, an it was all second hand when he fitted it) but we ve binned it as the racks are not available new, so its a no brainer and its physically much bigger, are racks are brand new, plus we like it as it uses nice hex bar for tie rods...
Its also a true rack system, no center idler or pitman arm, takes up space directly behind the beam, we will be using vw jims columns when where up and running.
we ll keep you posted on it, but it wont be available until where 100% happy and its had essentially a good hiding
cheers mark

I like the sound of this. Do you have any idea of a timescale and approximate cost?

I had a look at CE one at Volksworld and to be honest i simply dont understand it, they only utilise half the rack and it just operates whats already there and as said above makes parking even worse, a lot of moey for a retrograde step really

Its certainly not a retrograde step. With my recent suspension mods my bus feels more like and Elise than a camper van its ace. I think my 215 front tyres may be more responsible for heacy parking. The reason its laid out as it is is that you can still fit it to a front beam fitted with air ride (i.e. big air bags bolted on the back of the beam.)

Yeah but the only coments where people have said its OK are those who have had knackered components previosly, had they just changed these is it possible they would now have excelelnt rides forless cost and working horn etc?

hi guys after alot of tought, soul searching and investigation, we 're pulling are rack kit for reasons of public liability and indemnity...
We believe that are kit is one of the safest and one of the best true rack (not clanky assisted) systems out there, but due to not getting public liability on this at all, indemnity wouldnt apply as we ve designed it and as we ve been told we are not a major car manufacturer. You wont get cover or indemnity.
And anyone who tells you theyre product is covered will probably be lying unless its mr Ford.
Should something fail through no fault of are own the insurance company would persue us, so its a no brainer if ur rack fails at 70 mph plus(which ur bus isnt designed to do) you will more than likely die and others too, i couldnt live with that at all...
So ask as we ve been asked, its not just you that could die and who you leave behind... Guys it not worth my conscience
Ask others about there kit, be sure
sorry to be so heavy but we're gutted we cant do this as its a fab product and alots gone into it.....
cheers mark
P.s thanks overdubber
