Mike , that's correct VW Australia have no records at all, many have tried to get info but they cannot tell you a thing.
That's why if you try and get a birth certificate from Germany they do not have the records from AUS so they just guess from the chassis number, which might work if your van is pre 61?
Also as Australia is made of different States they each have their own Motor Reg Departments and they have no details either.
Even if you went to one of them with your number plate or even the chassis number they would not have any info and even if they did they cannot tell you anything because of the crap privacy laws here.
If you have an Aussie van with no Aussie numberplate or rego sticker (tax disc) you will never know what State in AUS it came from and you will never know how many owners or who they were. In AUS they don't list how many previous owners on any docs.
Dave

That's what I heard. I had a mate who has joined the police over there but he came up with nothing. Also, don't the reg plates belong to the driver, rather than the vehicle?

Aussie made vans after VW bought the new plant at Clayton in Victoria have letters stamped on the left hand side of the engine bay, this will be either,
K for Kombi
MB for Micro Bus
DMB Deluxe Micro Bus
DV delivery Van and I think PU Pick Up?
Thanks dave i can now tell that my bus was a microbus

Phil, is Tom looking after yours in Widnes???
Tell him Dave says hello, I think he has a few pictures of my previous vans on his wall?
The numbers after the letters on the left, be it MKA , which are the CKD one's or the numbers after the MB,K,DV,DMB or whatever do not have any reference to any records the numbers are just the van was the 123456789 or whatever van off the production line, mind you it is guessed that they started at 1000, so if your number is 2001 yours is the 1001st van off the production line.
All vans were built in Clayton, Victoria, where there is still a road called Kombi Rd.
There is a guy called John, IN2VWS on The Kombi Club and DSK who knows a hell of a lot more than me and has some records of production dates.
Believe me they dont tie in with the US or German records so if you check your Aussie van on the Samba or Birth Certificate from VW, it will not be correct.
Dave

Hi Dave,
thanks for the information on the production numbers will double check but mines about 1680.
I never used toms garage in runcorn as i try and do my own maintinence but one of my friends has just used him to tune his engine and very happy with his work.
I take it you used to live around this way?
I was hoping to find out some more history about my bus before it came over in 2004 but it looks like this may be a bit harder to do than i first expected.

Hi Guys,
Here is another one to add to the list...a 1964 Double Door Panel van...just finished the resto....see link below...
viewtopic.php?f=8&t=74277&start=0
Below the chassis number are the following characters...DDV1381 which I think mean this was the 380th Double door van manufactured in Australia...(I believe the numbering system started at 1001)
Cheers
Fritzy
