South African Pick Ups buffing query!

South African Pick Ups buffing query!

by David Eccles » Tue Oct 21, 2014 8:07 pm
I now have seen two forms of SA pick up trucks with dust reduction systems that are unique to SA.
1 a sort of horn shape air duct on each side of rear cab section by load bed (on an early 60s single cab)
2 a sort of thin box air duct with open side to draw in air facing up at each rear side of load bed (on a 67 Doka)
Nothing like the Aussie through the cab roof system / model
so who can tell me more ... or anything
NOT Fleetlines or similar..genuine CKD built / modified in SA 60s models
maybe an early / late thing or even a s/c //doka thing....

On that site the ears are on a 64< s/c and the rear boxes on a '61 doka so opposite to your early / late theory.

Perhaps s/c vs d/c then although to my simple brain it would be more logical to have the ears on the d/c where there is less distance to duct it.

yes dropgates shows the two perfectly....so clearly nothing to do with early / late thing like the Aussie double / single vents on kombis etc...
there is a SA single cab in UK with those weird ducts behind the cab....and the Doka that won Best at Brighton Breeze (soon to be featured in Camper mag) has the boxes at the rear...
interestingly dropgates knows only one with the big ducts and 6 with the boxes....

The single cab is a minty green and was up for sale three or four years ago I seem to remember.

Couple more pics here and references 67 singles having ears:

I am thinking now it seems to be a s/c and Doka difference....looking at fig's pics the s/c system has extra panelling to allow for air ducting from scoops and this would make rear cab space in Doka version smaller? So the doka model moved scoops to rear on the dropsides maybe for this reason plus also not to interfere with smaller load bed?
also of note is the suicide door like the old Binz Dokas on these SA RHD Doka's...

I presume the suicide door is because that's the only cargo door with a handle VW made so on a RHD it has to open that way?

This German built Aussie delivered bus has the same:

Also found this '60 SA one, same door and with the air intakes in the load bed:

My SA assembled 66 model year DC had the boxes on the rear gates. Not any more - I went for the more regular vents above the rear wheels when I restored it.

All RHD DC's have suicide doors.

ah yes...I had not internalised this at all, but obvious when you think about it! Without re-tooling this would have to be the case!
