Colour choice? Stock or not?

Colour choice? Stock or not?

by Pie » Tue Apr 07, 2015 7:02 pm
I am doing a resto on a 57, the original colour was dove blue, I like the colour but i do think that I slightly prefer PGSG which is also correct for the year. I do intend to keep the van for a while but I will sell it one day, would painting it the non original colour devalue it or would I be OK with the year correct colour?
The more I look the more I am starting to like the Dove blue mind!!

I don't know if it would devalue it but to me that wouldn't be an issue if I was buying, I do hate it though when buses are non standard colours

Much debated before and there's people on both sides of the fence on this one. Some people think its a crime not to paint it the OG colour. Personally I would keep it original if I was doing a concourse bus but other than that then I'd simply stick to stock colours.

Your bus, your choice.

Personally I like vehicles to be in their factory colour/s as it will always have a link to it and would annoy the hell out of me. I'd never dream of changing my dove blue 55 to PGSG even though that's my favourite combo. I did nearly buy a PGSG 57 before I found the 55 though.

I think it should stay dove blue true to its history, once you sell it you can buy PGSG, win win!

I think with 50s buses you can get away with stranger colour combos as lots of 50s buses came in all manner of colours on panels with advertising and westy painting them in their colours, which type of split is it?

Check out this monster bus-i love the colour

This is a very personal thing...
For me you are the owner you decide..
Well that was the politically correct answer...

BUT

I personally would paint it the colour on the birth certificate or M code....

OR

a colour which was used on your model...and year..

I have no dislike of any colour used just prefer them to be year specific and this can then be in keeping..

You could even have a repro M plate to carry off the obfuscation....LOL

I do not like two tone panels... just me!

This is funny, as when I bought my first bus (in 1990, cough), a dove blue kombi, I painted it porsche gambian red
Times change, and now that red is terrible...
Then, in the mid nineties i hand rollered a bay milka purple. A that time it was kind of cool.
I think that colour may have been worse than the red...
My old 56 was white, but originally pg/sg and I would have given anything for it to be those colours.
So now I love dove blue(!) and other original paint colours. I think VW knew hat they were doing when the painted them.
I don't think there is a problem with vw colours. other colours may not last the test of time...

Ah....Do what you want with it, its yours. Some people only love totally stock buses, others say certain things should be left stock, like the paint colour, but then change all the mechanics. Age old question with classic cars! At least paint can be changed at a later date!
