Colours inside a two tone bus

Colours inside a two tone bus

by 1959bus » Tue Jun 02, 2015 4:09 pm
Hi all,

I've had a search but its a difficult question to define in a search term!
My bus has finally gone for paint and I'm planning a two tone paint job, L87 Pearl White on top and L14 Reseda Green on the bottom. I've already painted the engine bay and underneath in the green.

viewtopic.php?f=8&t=105620&start=30

My question is, what colour should the inside be? It's a '59 so not sure if that would make any difference? It was originally Sealing wax red with a white roof and the dash was in red, rest of the van inside was white. I've gone L14 which was used up to 1959 (in type 1s) to keep it original(ish) but wanted it to look right from the inside.

Anyone have any ideas what would look right?

Cheers,

Jon

I just did mine in the white as it looks cleaner in my opinion, however I'm not sure that it's factory correct. I've seen lots of deluxe buses with the dash and interior painted in the top half colour.

I guess it depends what you are after, if you want it to be 100% factory correct, then however it left the factory, if you want it in a way that is most pleasing to you, then it's up to you.
I know, I've not been a lot of help so far ;) but I'm with Monkey. I did my inside in white, the same white as the top outside half, and as monkey says I think it does keep it nice and clean.

If you want to be original a 59 would have always have the dash/interior the same colour as the bottom half of the bus - so in your case the green.

As the colours are not original I`m not sure how important the originality is to you though? You could just paint the interior in the white if you prefer?

Hmm, so eg 61 MY mango dash, 62 MY beige grey dash.

So if I paint my 62 in a 61 colour which way do I go...

Correct :)

Some colours crossed over the 61/62 model years, these include SWR/BG, Turkis/BW and Mouse Grey/PW.

With these colours, depending on the model year of the bus, the dash can be either the top or bottom colour. SWR/BG had a lomg production run. It ran for approx three years either side of the change over date, so it`s commonly found in both dash variants.

MG/PW is more commonly found with the PW dash as the colour ran for longer after the change than before, but the Grey dash varient is not really that "rare" as such.

Turkis/BW is very rare to find with the Turkis dash. This is because this colour scheme was introduced slightly over half way through the 61 model year so there was only about 5 months or so of production with the turkis dash followed with about 36 months of production with the BW dash. 8)

Very interesting. .I always associated the change with the speedo pod shape change and the dash tray lip thickness.

Thanks for the extra info.

Problem is mine's a 62 SWR/BG but I am currently going to be a naughty boy and paint it mango because I don't like the OG colours and figured if I'm not going by what's on the m-plate then I could cheat by a few months on the year correctness of the colour.

I will have small rear lights so other than that the dash is, to my knowledge the only visual difference between 61 and 62. It will be a 62 speedo pod still so top-half colour would suit it but in mango it will be wrong to not have a mango dash.

Genuinely agonising over this. Knowledge can be a terrible burden. Maybe I should go turkis or mouse gray, they're quite nice too I suppose...

I like single colour buses. Never used to, but I do nowadays.

SWR all over looks pretty cool actually.
