How many can you sleep in a van

How many can you sleep in a van

by Jiggaman » Sat Jan 14, 2017 5:20 pm
I'm wondering how many people you can sleep in a van and how you guys do it?

I'm hearing conflicting views about how many you can comfortably sleep with some saying they are tiny inside and others who manage to get 2 adults and 2 kids.

Any advice you can give?

I've managed 2 adults and 2 6 year olds in a Devon with one in a cab bunk I had fitted and one over the engine. I think this year will be the last they fit though - next year it'll be for storage only

Ah, happy days camping with our two boys when they were little! Wilf was over the engine bay to start with, and Aitch on the bench seat. Then we upgraded to a Westy cot in the cab and both boys slept in the cab bunk style. Then of course we discovered the delights of roof tent camping ...
I'm going back a few years of course, and can't lay my hands on any photos easily. But feel free to go through my build thread in rides and projects for photos.
We managed two kids and a dog easily, in a tin top bench seat kombi.

Thanks Scotty, so can a cabin hammock like yours be fitted to any van, and where do you get one from?

You can get them from VW Heritage, or check out "Space " roof conversions to add two more beds ! I've got our splitty booked in for one in early Feb and will probably also need an awning for grand kids etc !

Those 3/4 roof conversions look great. That may well be the next logical step in a few years after my 5yr old had grown out of the cab hammock.

Thanks for the links to the hammocks on EBay. I can't see any mention of how long they are though? I assume they are about 1.4mtr ish if the van width is 1.7.

The figure in my head was that the distance between the brackets on the rear pole was 1520 mm.
No idea really.
I have seen a van with bigger child on a futon style cushion and sleeping bag on the lower level on the front seats and the foot well filled with soft items etc..
Then an infant above..

When the doors are closed there's a small-ish gap of a few cm but not enough to cause any problems.

We slept 4 in a RHD Devon in a similar fashion, but up until ours were 11 (daughter) and 10 (son) , daughter in cab hammock (bluebird hammock) and my son on the engine bed, but with two Devon rear cabinets as well!.... hahahahaha.... luckily we have small children...! they now sleep in a Khayam motor dome sleeper!

I used to sleep on the floor of a van while growning up traveling the roads with her VW caravelle. One of the best feelings in the world, sleeping and knowing your on motion. Great feeling. So yes, I can sleep in a van.
