Well you ask away, there's always somene on here willing to help.

As a guide you'll need about 120bhp to run a sub 18 and about 175+hp to run in the 15's

I started on the same journey in 2004 and you can read about the different stages here

No worries
Ha - I thought we had a dreamer there at £1500!
I've put my best estimates next to your item, none of which include fitting but in short that should get you there but there are always things you forget that add to the cost (extra gearbox mounts, oil cooler and lines, breather system, steering upgrades etc.) - it'll make a big difference if you're able to do some of the fitting work yourself.

There is a chance, don't be downhearted brother :D

Those figures are based on building a high spec 2332 making 185-190bhp - that in itself will be £6.5-7.5k dependng on what bits you use - but you don't need to go that route.

There are often turnkey motors for sale much cheaper or kits that would just need building - for example
http://www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?t=612562

This for example would push you into the 15's - http://www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?t=609420

I bought my first BWA motor from Paul Utting for £3500, it had already put his bus into the BWA, gave me my first sub 18 run and has since been sold and pushed another bus under 18 secs so it is possible to do it much cheaper and be reliable too.

You don't have to have a box built, some people run them on a stock box but you'll probably start unwinding 3rd and 4th gear if you drive it hard - a new rancho may be a grand but they do come up for sale now and then - for example - http://www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?t=607776

I bought one that had done 1500 miles for £700 (Cogbox built  )

Another route to look at which was a really cheap way of dong it a couple of years ago but for obvious reasons has become more expensive is to have an engine built in the states - maybe try dropping a line to Powerhaus in the US and see what your options are http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/ ... ?id=550433
I know he's very helpful and a friend had a top notch turbo engine built that has pushed his bus into the 14's for what would be the equivalent of approx £7k today - that's Turbo and injection and about 250+bhp 8O
I'm sure they could build a stout motor within your budget.

Hi Brian,

If your after an engine and gearbox I would recommend without reserve John Walket in Stoke on Trent, he's not on here but you'll find him on VZI "63 ragtop", he builds and races his own motors and has built countless "bus" engines including mine for one!

Best of luck in what ever you do and see you on the strip :-)

Cheers

thanks guys for the help

I dont want to go the turbo route ,carb or would like FI if it is worth the extra cost
I also do some drag racing at the mo so i know the cost of going fast ,the breakages and the addiction to getting that extra 10th

my main concern is finding the correct company to do the work at the right price,
do you think the engine parts on vzi would suit my needs? box has sold  would rather pay a little extra now to get a 15 than more money later
