Torvette Help Please

by tsunamivw » Fri Jan 02, 2015 4:13 pm
Hi All

I've just bagged a Devon Torvette (I think) interior, lots of bits, including the cooler, but it needs a lot of help, some bit need replacing entirely, it doesn't have the drawers and I have very little idea how it fits together. So... any pictures, plans, books that people can point me towards would be great.

Cheers

Hi Sean

Is your Torvette a 'walk through' or 'bulkhead'?

I also have a Torvette 'bulkhead' version, here is a link to my thread that will give you a bit of info. The Torvette continued on from the Devonette and sold in small numbers, most stumped up for the Caravette instead.

Please share any thing you find, type21f is a great source of knowledge regarding all things Devon as are the rest of the DICS on here.

Good luck with your search. I have made a lot of progress on mine lately, (should update my thread!!).

Hi Peter, I'm told it's a bulkhead that someone tried to convert to a walkthru so I'm keen to see a bulkhead model and try to make sense of what I've got. I'll have a look at your thread and if I find out anything new I'll let you know. Cheers Sean

I think the Torvette kind of works like a walkthrough even on the bulkhead version - you still have the two buddy seats but on the non-walkthrough version you have a near full length slider cupboard to go with them. The rear setup is the same either way though - similar to the Caravette Spaceway's I've seen but with extra headbanger cupboard and a double instead of single offside cupboard:

(note, the comments are correct, it shouldn't have the mag rack)

A couple of albums from Graham's photobucket, hope he doesn't mind me linking:

Post up photos of what you've got so we can have a look.

No Jonathan...
I was just about to post the same... LOL
I have been looking for photos of the Cooker in use in my own collection, but I think they were in a WT spaceway.

Barndoorz Peter has a Torvette Cooker which I had a chance to buy and passed on to give him the chance to buy from the forum for his bus. On reflection I am not sure where this was or could be fitted. There are very few of these about..
Also I do not know who made the TORVETTE cooker....I do not believe these are logo's or labelled at all.

http://s619.photobucket.com/user/type21 ... t=3&page=1

I am STILL looking for one for my Devonette... but to paraphrase quote VWed....I believe there is one out there... Probably with the Devon upper awning rail I seek! LOL
There are also pictures of that cooker filed in my folders

The interior from the Velvet Green Kombi was flat packed and shipped out to NZ for one of the Antipodean DICS to resurrect. Barndoorz

Torvette Brochure Pictures

http://s619.photobucket.com/user/type21 ... t=3&page=1

This shows the cooker in use hooked on the side over the cushion over the easicool. So may be it was used here.
The brochure also appears to show that on the division bus it appears as if you can make up two single beds from the dickey seats!

A67MAN had a Division Torvette interior fitted in a bus with slight additions. Ian may well have detailed photos to share.

The pictures do not show it but I believe the rear seat had an over wheel arch easicool with metal box frame and pull out dicky seat ply board on top with wire support frame/leg. There are pictures of how this looks works on slapper's Spaceway WT bus.
Will find the link.

Easicool housing is makeable...BJI has a thread

https://archives.ssvc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=66339

Should have downloaded the pictures into my files when I could...now I think they are "protected"...
Steal with Pride...is my motto...

I believe the cooker was mounted on the division on the spaceway and you pulled out the seat to sit on to cook. So maybe it was or could be mounted here as a variation.

I belive you plan to use in a LHD bus (?)
Maybe it would all work without conversion? or you could swap over the extended piece over the wheel arch by building a support piece under neath as in the Devonette...(will provide pictures)
AFAIK the easicool frame will fit over the other wheel arch fine..
Lots of fun..
Off to seek the cooker mounting pictures..
You will see from the Torvette Pictures It has flushmount fittings rivetted on the back which hooked onto ......not the division I think.....the side after all

Ian may have detailed pictures of how his worked...

Will be a very unusual bus when finished..

What did you get with the interior PICTURES

What colour is your bus Ah Blackish and Whitish!

Some nice red 1960 curtain materials I have found would look ace. I have the details...
Did you get any cushions?

Result!

Now the dilemma of fitment into LHD....do you swing the easicool housing or not!
Think one could live with RH layout in LH bus...If it did not have tall cupboard which had to go by door.....

Do you have two buddy seats for the front or just one?

Patience is a virtue seldom found in women never found in men!

That would be me then ....... all re-finished now. It was mostly complete, a bit rough though! I repaired all the de-laminated veneer, stripped all the old French polish off and mixed up new shellac and recoated. Bus is progressing nicely, new transaxle and engine gone in this last week that I had rebuilt quite some time ago, getting closer to being able to fit the interior.
All panel work completed, repairs have had new paint blended, I am doing everything myself so takes time.

A good amount of info already for you Sean, good luck. Look forward to seeing some photos.

There were some 66 period rear drawers and a side drop down shelf instead of the magazine rack for sale in vw parts emporium for ages. I steered several people to look at them... discussed with clymoj.
But checked when I read your post and see they are no longer shown = sold.
I believe when the WT model was introduced VW had the spare wheel mount on the RHD NS complete with wheel well. Because Devon had the tall cupboard on the NS in the 66 MY which covered the wheel trough in the rear ..the Devon conversions moved to have a set of rear drawers which actually had a flat storage area ....On the OS with drop down flap to hold the spare wheel. As in Slapper's slide show..
Not sure if division buses had standard drawers?
Anyone?
Bobley posted pictures of standard drawers you could use to make some standard drawers...but would need someone to post drawings of 66 drawers....If you wanted to go that way..
Sure bu5nut would make you some..
Bus colourway looks really nice...

I think Richard (rdean) took the Spaceway side flap and easicool pull out seat from partsemporium to fill in the gaps on the Caravette Spaceway interior I sold him.

Hi Sean,

I have a RHD 66 Torvette Standard.

The interior is in good condition apart from I don't have any rear drawers, but I think they were an option, and I'm missing the cushion that sits on top of the easycool (anyone have a spare piece of green duracour?).

If you need any photos/measurements let me know.

Neil.
