Cabinet, mag rack and catch year ID please
Cabinet, mag rack and catch year ID please
by clymoj » Sun Oct 26, 2014 7:01 pm
OK super-pervs, can anyone help me ID these parts and help me with the differences.
Firstly a door cupboard. I picked up three quarters of it from the lovely Matt Smith last week after months maybe years of annoying him asking about it. Got it home and found a spare top door to complete it. I don't know if it is the correct one but I have reason to believe it might be.
The cupboard came from a very late (thin front arches late) '62 Devon. '62s had a cooker on the rear door and the cutlery cupboard on the front door though, of which this appears to be neither. So I'm thinking it's a MY63 bathroom cabinet and Devon had brought the '63 style in at the very end of MY62.
Whole cabinet:
My spare door held as it would open - upwards - all the holes line up and it fits perfectly:
Shelf in the middle with plasticised aluminium edging as seen on magazine racks of the era:
Hole in top of cupboard for mounting flap-up door:
Hole in my spare door to mount to cabinet:
Rubber bump stops for the flip up door to close against:
Bottom door flips down and top door has evidence of mirror mounting - but the mirror mounted with top and bottom screws whereas the reference pics of Rippers' later '64 bathroom cabinet has the mirror mounted left to right:
Rippers' '64 bathroom cabinet, obviously his catch is on the opposite side because his is LHD:
But also his top door hinges are different:
So this got me investigating...
I have a couple of spare catches and bits that belong to other parts, and I noticed differences.
Firstly the mag rack catch that also holds the bathroom cabinet door open and also holds the lid of the '62 sink open. I have three different styles. From my '62 sink unit (cabinet photographed on its side; the lid opens up to the right):
And two different ones from mag racks (with the '62 sink one on the right):
They also have slightly different offsets from the screw holes to the edge of the catch. The one from the mag rack doesn't fit the bathroom cabinet door and would be upside down:
The middle of my three from another mag rack does fit it, and also is the correct way round for the other half of the catch to operate properly with a gravity-assisted close (left of photo is the top of the door when open):
The same as Rippers' but with the 180 degree flip as his is LHD:
So onto the two mag racks I have.
The first is the owner of the longest catch. It has a flat (not curved) slope to the edge where the magazines go in. It has a flat front (no raised details):
The second has a curved top where the magazines go in. It has ribbed batons running down the front face:
And finally, the slider catches. The top one here is from the bathroom cabinet described above, the bottom one is from one of my '62 sink units:
So:
1. is my cabinet a '63 bathroom cabinet?
2. have I found the correct door for it?
3. are there year changes in the mag rack catches or is there just a difference between ones that go on the left or right hand side of the bus?
4. which mag rack is early or late, when did they change and which should I keep for my '62 interior?
5. are there year specific differences to the slider catches?
Thanks in advance.

Updates:
1. the cupboard is, apparently, a one year only washstand cabinet
https://archives.ssvc.org.uk/viewtopic ... 4&t=101633
This link (and a text from Dan/boyden) state '64 only so not sure whether my info about the origins of mine are awry. But then Rippers' '64 looks different so maybe like all these things, not clear cut.
5. apparently (also text from Dan/boyden) the spherical headed catch bolt is correct and the cylindrical head is from another catch that has been screwed onto the original slider.

deffo the right door you have, thats lucky
there are x2 styles of bathroom cabinet
the open topped ones like yours came first
the closed top ones came later
but both within a 1-2 year period, 63 - late64/early65
mirrors came mounted both ways…maybe depending on the fitters mood LOL
The only small rear hatch devons I have ever seen with the bathroom cab are the ones in the Devon Brochures (for the 64 brochure)…all the 'real' ones have always been large rear hatch
which makes me think they didn't start till the very end of the small hatches, so mid to late 63
late to 62 to early 63, i'd expect to see a cooker on the door and sink in the side
Mag rack…the curved top one is the earlier of the 2

Excellent, thanks. So it looks like either this came out if a demonstrator or the 'thin lipped 62' was a misremembering of a '63 over time.
The door is very lucky, it came via a source where it may be the actual one from this unit reunited. Although I have one more lead to chase down to check.
So when did the mag rack change? Does anyone have either style in their early bus?
And if anyone has a cutlery cupboard they want to swap...

61 had the curved style mag rack
63 didn't
so…sometime around 62 they changed…end of the angled sink model is my 'guess'

Not a spare catch I'm afraid no. I have two and you need two for a 62/3 interior because the sink lid has one to keep it open.
63/5 has a second one to keep the bathroom cabinet shaving mirror open too.
If you search back through for sale someone was selling three or four last year; I'm not sure if they all sold?
