What hinge?
by scotto75 » Thu Apr 16, 2015 2:05 pm
Posted this in the main section, and was reliably informed that this is the place to ask, so....
I've got a devon cooker top with no hinges. I can't find any photos that give me a clear ID as to what an original hinge looks like. Here's my cooker top.
Can anyone help me ID them? A good photo of one would be great
Cheers!
(I know any hinge will do the job, but I'd like to find one that at least resembles an original)

Will do when I get home...
MY?
Interior is not original to the bus?
Cooker cupboard looks to be from WT with seat made to fit..
EDIT***** I thought an appropriate hinge was one like on the front seat back and looks like a dog bone hinged along the length I think... Like a figure of eight?
Caravan Supplies has something like..
Will post photo L8tr.but NO.******EDIT
Looked for Mike1973's thread on Slappers WT
I think you can see hinge on that...Titian Red and Beige Grey 1967 WT.
Very nice guy...
Spencer Marshall
Had a look and it looks like a demountable hinge so you can lift off the lid and erect the aluminium shield.....
EDIT****** TAKE OFF HINGE*****EDIT
I do not know if these are easy to find but the hinge would hold the lid in place when closed and when lifted is able to be demounted...
Maybe why your lid has no hinges...
I will look to see

Yes. I've only just got the van, and have little history on the interior, but know that it's been made from pieces of a Devon interior, the main part being the cooker cupboard. It was a transporter originally.

I did see some that had what looked like a butterfly hinge. Not sure what age the unit is that I have? The van is a '57, but thought the unit was more sixties?
It also looked like the hinge was riveted into the black top, but screwed into the wooden frame?
Thanks for the tip with Caravan Supplies. I will check them out.

The witness marks on your first picture also show a square hinge. I had presumed it wasn't original but having now seen the other pictures...

Somewhere. .....I have a close up picture of this hinge in use on a Spaceway where the Torvette style cooker sat in this position.
IIRC there is also a picture showing that the demountable hinge allowed the lid to be removed from a dicky seat to make up the bed.
I posted pictures in the forum on Spaceway bed making.
These pictures were taken by my friend and not too far away neighbour Mark Buckingham
I will mail him and ask him to take a close up picture.
IIRC both pieces are screwed down and the one piece has a bar going across and the other has a loop which engages into it.
I did see some in a hardware catalogue... as demountable hinges.

Something like the design above and yes the part attached to the formica lid was probably rivetted in there whilst the part attached to the wooden frame was screed in.
Looking closely at your picture you can see the remnants.

it's definitely riveted into the top, and the wood frame still has the brass screws.
Demountable or detachable! After you said it was removable I'd been looking for split hinges but not finding the right thing. Not too familiar with hinge types. Hopefully there'll be one that has the two holes the same width apart so I don't have to make any extra holes unnecessarily.
