Early/late Devon interior project
by paul_f » Sun Oct 11, 2015 8:41 pm
I have been looking for a Devon interior since the beginning of the year, and finally one came up on the SSVC facebook last weekend. type21f was very helpful with pricing, and fortunately Simon agreed.
I went and collected it yesterday 400 mile round trip to Devon!
It isn't complete, and is some early (either 61 or 63?) and some late. And a bit of home made.
I think parts of it have been around a bit: I think smiffy210 had it first, then Rob mcreedie bought it on ebay from someone else and it lived in Kev's house for a bit. Then Simon bought the bus from Rob and sold the interior to me.
I am putting it in a 1966 bus that originally was a Canterbury Pitt (long gone before I bought the bus 13 years ago) - but I wanted a Devon so my daughter can sleep over the engine bay.
Anyway here are the pictures:

Wardrobe:
This still has the original mirror, but does have some damage to the bottom. The aluminum plate is covering some missing plywood that has rotted away so will need repairing.
Has lots of varnish on it.

What's the ally plate at the bottom? Mine doesn't have that.

Rear drawers - I think these are 66 (due to the handles) but are missing the correct top covers. I will need to replace these so it can be used for a cot.
I think it is missing the short lid for the leg cupboard, and the long cover has been ripped off its hinges and has damaged formica.
Also the divider is damaged

I forgot to take a picture from the inside, but is covering up the fact that the inner corner has rotted away!

Rear facing bench
The sliding cupboard is again red top. A small amount of damage at one end, but overall good condition
The bench has been cut short as there is no easicool. A closing piece of ply has been fitted

Front facing bench
I think the back panel of the front facing bench is home made as it is just stained ply. I will have to have a look at other peoples photos or the drawings.
Not sure whether the thin ply spacer at the front edge is supposed to be there
This is the back panel:

Table
Not sure this is original, I don't think so as the red formica is a different pattern

Table store
This is early, whereas my bus is late. It has also had some 6x9 holes butchered in - though those bits of ply don't look original (but the frame has been cut)
As I don't think my table is original, are the later style tables thinner (I thought they had the alloy trim around the edge?) or has it been modified for a thicker table?

Cupboard to side of front facing bench
This is definitely home made, and won't be going in!
As I use a coleman petrol cooker, I will probably have this as a two door cupboard. Though I may change my mind as maybe a sink would be useful for cleaning teeth?

Missing parts
So the missing parts that I am after are:
Two later rear upper cupboards
Magazine rack
Door cupboards
Method of mounting a table
Table legs

I recognise that technique...LOL..
Glad you have got it!
So will wait for all the details and have drawings from Bobley and others. ..for some of the missing pieces..
With sympathetic resto will be very good..

This week I have to finish decorating the dining room, but then the first piece to be worked on will be the rear drawers and table leg store.
A few questions
I need to clean it up - I think it has been varnished - any tips to remove it so I can then french polish it?
Need to get some black formica (will try and get it from my local IDS branch) as well as some veneer to make some localised repairs.
Can I buy this from anywhere?
What sort of ply do I need to get to make repairs (ie the divider)
The short table store, how does the lid attach - doesn't appear to have any hinges?
I need to source new hinges and handles for the drawer top covers - looks like camper supplies have those though

So the front facing seat is supposed to have the 4mm ply spacer according to Bobley's plans
