iPhone 5, 6, 6s and 7 dock for Ashtray
by Squirtz » Fri May 29, 2015 11:29 am
been messing around with a 3d printer, I struggled to find a nice solution to use my iphone in the van so made a nice dock that fits snuggley into the ashtray still allowing it to open and close, are these worth making to sell do you think?

Great Idea for the iPhone 5/6
Is there a bit of extra room to allow for a protective case ?
If so i would have one

yes the design allows for a protective case on the Iphones, in both directions it has been given clearance.
The cable is held in with grub screws so it can be replaced just in case the cable wears out/breaks as this has happen to me with the one I use in hte kitchen at home. although this cable could be glued in! but that would mean throwing away the dock as well!
I have only allowed for charging at the moment (Lightning connector) but could have another hole in the dock for the 3mm jack socket for those who do not have bluetooth on the stereo.(obviously you would need to drill this hole in the ashtray as well)
hopefully some more people will be interested as well

I'd be interested depending on price being reasonable.

I've been meaning to do this for ages by hacking up a dock. If this works out cheaper and easier then I'd have one.
Could you add space for general usb sockets in the space behind as well (probably using a usb extension cable from a hidden cigarette adapter elsewhere)? - my sat nav and various passenger's phones could be charged at the same time then
Like it though, very neat compared to others I've seen.

Is there any support for the back of the phone? As if it is just secured by the plug your phone internals will come loose.! Looks great though.

there is no support for the back of the phone as people have different phone cases its hard to have a fixed point to do this. you can put a piece of packaging foam inside though as there is room to do this if you are worried about it. However I have had mine in the van for a while with both my old iphone 5s and the new 6 for 3months with no problems at all and previously I had a standard phone dock cut into the back of the ashtray which also has no support and that was still working before I replaced it with this new design (that was in there 1 1/2 years).
Be good to hear other peoples views on a support cos I could also print an adjustable rear slide but it would mean that the ashtray might not be able to close not sure if thats important to people though.
also earlier clymoj says he'd like personally to also see a usb in the dock for plugging in other items, is this something others would see as a benefit although they would have to be behind the phone due to available real estate and would probably mean taking you phone out to plug/unplug the usb here could be an issue!
look forward to your views!

mmm looking at the cost they are going to end up around £30 because the 3d print material is expensive
what does everyone think, is £30 acceptable?
Im going to continue anyway and make some and see what happens!
