Ice pick handle base
by russbmx » Sat Dec 14, 2019 11:39 pm
Hi,
I am on the look out for a passenger Ice pick handle base plate as mine is broken where the spring hooks over.
My bus is a 62. I have another base plate (on the right in the photo) but it’s different to mine.
Thought I’d show the difference to help identify the one I need (on the left)
Cheers in advance.
Russ

Hi, it is a regular problem that bases break. The handle castings are made of Mazac or 'Monkey metal''. A polished and chromed, lowish melting point Zinc 95% Aluminium 5% alloy. The chrome is porous and the Mazac surface corrodes/ bubbles/ blisters. It becomes weak over time and brittle.
Ice pick handles: There are two basic styles. Long hook for early flush door panels and short pick for post 61? recessed handle mount handles. Not exactly sure of change date! If you show a side view this might explain a little better what the two you show are? 1962 built doors were short hook.
I have seen buses with an early and a late door fitted and thus mixed period handles. Rusty1962 had this issue.
I have a 1962 bus and both my handles came with smashed bases. I hunted for a complete pair of replacements.
It is easy to disassemble the broken base for replacing a broken spring or replacing a handle base. Simply place the handle on it's side over the parted jaws of a vice and carefully drift the pin out. It comes out easy one way and not the other?
Driver's door locking and Passenger door non locking have common base castings? One solution successfully used by others is to transplant in a base from a cheap modern repro. So any suitable shaped base would work.
I do have a box of bits but 300 miles away in storage so I will not be able to help today. I plan to reunite myself with my handle stash but this will be in the new year. Pictures to help..
Short: Door panels with recess
Long: Flush door panels, no recess
One other thought is a possibility!
Handles were made by several suppliers this may be a maker variation but I doubt it!

Wow! Thank you for all the info.
I didn’t know the differences but now I do.
Mine are the correct original 62 doors so they have a recess meaning I need a base plate for a later short ice pick handle then.
I’m in no major rush it’s just one of many jobs on the winter list that I would like to tick off

If and when you do reunite yourself with your handle stash and find a base you might be willing to sell give me a shout

If I find one before hand I will let you know!

If I see one in the mean time I will let you know.
Are you looking to maintain patina? If so then Auto jumbles coming up might be a source. Often see handles with chewed barrels but good bases.
Had hours of fun with handles. Lots on here will have odd bits of handles. If you are looking for non locking them a straight swap etc..of a complete handle..
Rusty1962 had fun and had some bits..

That is an ice pick base but looks to be the same as the loose base he has?
Do you know what hear this was from?
Maybe a makers variation! The bar to screw support distance looks longer.
I never checked to see if there was a difference between locking and non locking.. that needs to be checked.. sadly I think only by comparing physically will you tell..!
I found photos of my long ago smashed bases and these look the same as the good base he has?

You are spot on as alway Graham, the one above looks to be the same as the spare one I have.
I didn’t think about the bases being different from locking to non locking. I might pull the drivers side off and have a look!

That would add to the collective knowledge but... IIRC...both my 62 handles had smashed bases, so those were both fitted to my 62 but neither handle returned so did not have operating springs. I thought the springs were broken. So I stripped them off to find that the bases were smashed. They were still held firm in the doors.
I also sought replacement bases. In the end I came across some nice shiny NOS ones..(at reasonable expense at the time)
I believe those are a pair.
There are several makers as shown by the symbols at the end of the casting data in the inside of the pull handle.
BUM for one and a symbol which looks like a burning fire. It may help to identify your maker symbol.
Is that your handle on the left from your bus, or not?

That’s exactly what I done, I bought a new spring and removed the handle to fit the spring and then realised it was broken. Yes the one on the left is my actual handle, Iv put it back on now as it works okay it just doesn’t return. I will remove it when I’m back down the garage and bring it home with me.
I’m also trying to connect up my heating which is proving to be a pain as well

Sure looks the part! It is a 62 base. Has shorter front tooth and has the ribs underneath right to the back. The centre bar looks in the correct place. It looks like the base on the broken handle pictured! Looks like my broken bases.
