1954 RHD Barndoor Doubledoor

1954 RHD Barndoor Doubledoor

by 49barndoor » Thu Mar 05, 2015 8:41 pm
With some recent interest in my DD from both sides of the pond I thought I would update this 01/03/2016

First £60k takes it with no rack, ladder and manual..

Update 23/05/2015 Back up and running with all fluids replaced, Engine Oil, Gearbox Fluid, Brake Fluid and Castrol Spheerol in the Steering Box, Everything works as it should.

Links to some videos ( Bit poor I'm no film maker lol ) v v v v v

Here is a couple of albums with loads of detailed pics from the underside etc etc v v v v

Bellypans for the underside are not fitted in the pics but will be bolted up for ease of access.

This panel was restored to a high standard nearly 10 years ago and I have owned it for 3 years but its not turned a wheel in 12 months so its time for a change.

Its the oldest known bus to be originally delivered to the UK.
There is only 6 known RHD Barndoor Doubledoors (type 21F) worldwide.
This is the oldest RHD Doubledoor known to exist.

It was restored to stock spec using its original engine/gearbox and 16" wheels.
The first owner kept this van for over 30 years and its history is fully documented.
I have a disc with hundreds of pics that go back to the early 80s and the resto was also documented with pics.
It was a Ultra VW mag feature in 2007.
Its due to be featured in a German book later in the year celebrating 65 years of the VW Bus.
Its a seriously rare old bus that should really be in a museum or someone may see it as a great base to build something special, Oldspeed Okrasa, Pepco Supercharger, 356 Engine? Cool 356 Outlaw/Racer support vehicle?

At one point I planned to get a little radical with this van but talked myself out of it and sold the 2110cc motor and Erco's etc.
Its really too nice for my requirements, Its abit wasted on me as I need something I can abuse.
A tasteful mod I planned was to fit two pairs of cargo doors with windows and a rear bench seat for the kids.
This has obviously not happened yet but if it doesn't sell then its still my plan.
It has a genuine BeKoWa full length industrial style roof rack and very rare genuine matching BeKoWa fold-up ladder.
A few other nice bits like a 1954 factory workshop manual (English language version) 1950s BeKoWa catalogue and crank start handle etc etc. etc.

Its pretty close to mint condition but would take a weekends work to recommission.
Has old fuel in the tank and carb, Starter motor removed at present and brake fluid leaked from a rear brake cylinder.
Just trying to say as nice as it is you will still need a trailer it wont drive you home the way it stands. (WORK NOW DONE)
The previous owner drove to Germany and back in 2007 but its still probably only covered about 4000 miles in 8 years.

I would want £68k and would consider taking something interesting in part exchange.
Another bus? Split bug? Vincent motorcycle? 356 Porsche? Gasser?
Would knock off £2k if the rack/ladder/8 BeKoWa stamped clamps are not required.

Happy to deal with oversees but it would be nice if it stayed in the UK.

A few pics from 1985 when it moved from the original owner to its first barndoor enthusiast owner and more pics over the next few pages v v v v

Cheers Dai your right its a real piece of history and a fantastic bus but its a little wasted on me as I really need something I can hot rod and fly about scaring the local boy racers. This bus is far too nice for that in my opinion and I have my eye on something I could happily get radical with

It was a full bodied barnfind when I bought it a couple of years back, I kept everything off it, The original saddles are like new and it was still fitted with its original extending rear luggage carrier and spare wheel. All the panels etc went in the attic as I might restore it one day but the idea was to have it look like a survivor skelly. Couple of hoops to jump through with the DVLA as it had been off the road since the early 70s, Change the gear box fluid, rims/tyres and on the road it went with it being a 58
