Straight axle issues, help?

Straight axle issues, help?

by donnydhc » Thu Feb 13, 2014 2:24 pm
I have fitted a swing axle (karmann Ghia) gearbox and axles coming straight out of a running car, butty`s spring plates and type 3 rear drums and back plates.
evrything bolts up and looks great but each time I tighten the hub nuts I amm getting an oil leak from the back of the backplate. When I take the drum off and remove the bearing cover it seens to have folded the bearing seal over in one place. Cant really get my head round it? Is it just inferior hub/bearing seals? as I have used ones from GSF, or am I missing out on something?
I have fitted the drum to the shaft without the back plate and bearing cover and put the hub nut on and seem to be able to pull about 30mm of shaft play outwards? is this normal?
Any ideas appreciated

What bearing covers are you using?

Did you use all the spacers off the OG setup?

T3 bearing covers or Bus bearing covers?

Unlikely, but need to be there.

Have you mofieid the axle tubes to the right length? seems an obvious one, but couldnt see any reference to it!

some pictures of your problem might help here like

heres how the spacers/seals should be positioned.... bear in mind the paper seals on most repro rear wheel bearing kits are absolute gash and need trimming inner diameter enlarging I also put a paper seal inbetween the axle tube and the backing plate..... be sure the hole in the bearing endcap aint blocked

Thinking about this today are you putting the outer collet on to the axle then sliding the bearing cover on?
I had this once on my old 67 then tried putting the collet in to the bearing cover and then sliding it on to the axle and this solved it.

think that was the issue ben, looks like its all sorted now. Think the seals are a little soft and inferior to the origionals so seem to not like being manipulated. Also berpsta I had issues with them aswell and have sacked them of in place of plenty of the blue stuff! combination of non genuine stuff requiring some softly softly approach me thinks!
Thanks every one this was destroying me!

With that type of SA kit you don't adjust the tube length.

Not with that type of SA kit, early (or repro covers) are needed on the type where you extend the axle tube length to get straight spring plates.
