Wondering if someone could point me in the right direction.

Fitted a new exhaust and oil change, all good and van was running fine, a little splutters at high revs, but not noticeable.

Since then, 2 days ago, I have replaced the front tinware but blocked all the holes in the front tinware, that is the only change. It now splutters all the way?

It feels like it is restricted, or like the choke is on? Excessive power loss and struggles with any hills! I'm stumped to how this can suddenly change over night?

It is a 1641dp running twin solex.

Any ideas what may have happened?

Check you haven't disturbed the leads as you've been working on it. Make sure they are plugged into the top of the dizzy cap properly and also check the points gap ect.

Yeah, cheers lee. Checked my leads first as it does feel like its running on 3, but all good, and on electronic ignition so not points either???

Really strange as it was fine the day before.

The VW specialist near me is fully booked till 1st May!!!

does one of the manifolds feel cold? Ie determine which side or cylinder may not be firing?

I've checked leads before and thought they were all ok, one seemed fine when curved for my test, but was failing when connected to the engine. Only found out by luck while retesting.

I've had a distributer that had turned in the past, also have you checked your timing?

Have some spare leads so may try a few options. If lead was playing up, would that mean one cylinder was maybe not firing and that side manifold would run colder? Makes sense. If they are all warm, does that rule out the leads?

Ah, front right is cold!

So I guess that means lead or plug? Could it be anything else?

I'd temporarily swap the lead to the other plug on that side and see if the problem follows,
Otherwise, take the plug out, if it has any visible sign of damage (being hit by the cylinder) then wait for someone else to reply... You could make things worse by getting it to fire?

You can rule out fuel, as the other cylinder on the same carb appears to be firing (as its warm)

If the plug works fine on the other cylinder, take the valve cover off that side and see what happens with the valves opening and closing when you turn the engine by hand, but I'm guessing a failed cylinder/valve would make the manifold very hot?

I had switched the lead over already and all the same, pulled the plug and it wasn't giving a spark... A new one and she's running like a dream. Surprised as those plugs were all new about 500 miles ago. Wondering if I should change them all?

I now have a mix of Bosch and ngk equivalent. Any opinions on the best choice for a 1641 running twin carbs?

Bosch plugs by any chance??

NGK's all the time for me these days.

Yeah they were Bosch, now have one Ngk in, will change them all over now.

Do you use the B5HS?

Japanese NGK's v Chinese Bosch, only one winner. A mate made the same mistake, put new Bosch in and had misfire problems. Took them out and cleaned up the German Bosch ones he had in before and all was fine. Unless you can find German plugs then avoid. I've used NGK for years in all my cars with no issues
