how can I tell if a bus has been IRS'd?
how can I tell if a bus has been IRS'd?
by ernie » Tue Aug 26, 2014 7:25 am
Morning all,
After selling my splitty a couple of years back, i'm itching for another.
Going to look at one today but the owner thinks it's been IRS'd but he's not sure (he's not a VW expert).
My old bus had reduction boxes.
How can I tell, just by looking, whether it's been IRS'd in simple terms?
thanks,

take it for a test drive and go round a roundabout as fast as you can.....if it rolls over, its SA, if it doesnt , its IRS
(or crawl under the back, if it has thin axles that turn when the wheel turns... and diagonal supports going from the hub area to the gearbox area, its IRS
if it has big thick tubes that do NOT turn when the wheel turns...then its SA - straigh axled or original reduction boxes)

Straight axle:
Notice no diagonal a-arms and it has rubber gaiters only on the gearbox end.
Aftermarket IRS:
Notice the diaganol a-arms and the rubber gaiters at both the gearbox and the wheel end.
Beetle/Porsche IRS:
As above but the diaganol a-arms are a lot fatter.
Could also have bay IRS but the diagonal a-arms and rubber gaiters are still what you're looking for.
