Gear stick help please
Gear stick help please
by bex88 » Mon Oct 27, 2014 9:30 am
Pictures of my two gear sticks the longer one is a 62-65 but I need some help to identify the shorter one. I think it is a 66-67
The problem I am having is after replacing my front shift rod with the only option available WW 62-67 it appears that the 62-65 shifter does not fit. It is too short a distance from the spring cup to the end of the ball and therefore pops out of the socket. The shifter off a 66-67 has a longer distance at this point and should solve the problem. I was expecting them to be the same length overall but this shifter is shorter overall. Can anyone confirm if the shifter in a 66-67 is indeed shorter?
Thanks

Have a look on the samba - search "shift rod bushing installation"

Thanks.
Had a look there and from that info I think the smaller length shifter is off a 66-67. Can anyone confirm?

I had a LOT of head scratching when I come to this part on my bus.
mostly because I didn't even know about the different types of gear stick and thought the one I had was the one for my bus - everything else was.
I knew something was amiss and it was driving me nuts, it was like the lower part of the stick was too short !
I was about to give up, and then I noticed the "other" gearstick behind the front seats.
the longer one fits my american 66

thanks, great feedback. I think I had the same problem as you. The replacement front shift rods say they cover 62-67 but I don't see how its possible when the gear stick on a 62-65 is the shorter version. The 66-67 shifter sits right into the ball socket. When you shift gears how smooth is it?

As far as I'm aware fine . Can't really answer as I'm still working on the engine. At least now I can select all the gears.
With the shorter stick the ball end would come out the socket part unless you pushed it down, which you just couldn't do.
I couldn't figure it out- was driving me nuts. When I found the other stick behind the seats and noticed the difference in length I turned into victor meldrew
I DONT BELIEVE IT !

like it. I had the same issue as you. I could select all the gears but it would pop out of the socket in 4th. I can now get all gears including reverse. 1-2 tends to be really smooth but 3-4 is a bit harder. Maybe it will be better once the box is refurbished too

Hi , maybe of interest , I had terrible problems selecting gears in my newly purchased 66 Kenyan import splittie. I got a empi gear stick from GSF which has two adapter plates one for each size. This was a really quick and easy fix. Ten minute job, bargain at £70 . Plus you can flog the old gearstick on eBay.
Cheers Colin
