Engine build

Engine build

by gazpilot » Thu Aug 27, 2015 4:22 pm
Ok, got myself a case that's been machined for full flow, 94mm pistons and up to 76mm crank.

I want to keep my rear stock on RB's and don't really want a screamer. I'd like to be able to get up to 60-70 fairly quickly and stay there all day.

I've got the books but so many options have me going in circles. I've friends in the states for the kit so looking for advice on what others are running. I intend to do this myself with a little technical info from a local classic restoration company.

From what I've read I'm thinking 1914cc

MAHLE 94mm B&P's
CBP 044's single Spring?
CBP 1440 steel forged crank with VW journels
Con rods h beam
Camshaft?
8 dowel lightens flywheel

Ideas?

You don't really need a lightened flywheel. Look at Dpr for cranks

Those heads might be a bit lairy for a bus. Have you looked on the thesamba.com engines/transmissions forum? http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewforum.php?f=12

Thick wall 92mm barrels/pistons, 76mm crank, I beam rods, Engle 110/120, CB cnc round ports 40/35.5.

If it were my build though, I'd clearance more for an 82mm crank. DPR are ok but why start a new build an a crank that's already ground undersize? Scat are excellent then CB 2nd choice...

Good luck

I see coolair do a Scat Volkstroker bottom end kit for about £850 which seems pretty good? Was thinking of getting one of these to pep up my standard 1776. Anybody had one?

& I'm just reading Keith Seume's air cooled engine interchange manual again which is pretty interesting (probably a bit out of date now but interesting history)

Good luck with the build

I would still vote DPR, even with shipping and taxes they are cheaper and a lot of top end drag bugs use them. I am more than happy with mine!!
