Rear door cards
Rear door cards
by Shiplee123 » Fri Aug 28, 2015 6:28 pm
Actually I've a question about the two rear side wall cards.
I've got a 1966 11 window kombi and I'm refitting the interior.
Most of the door cards are strait forward but the two cards behind the r n r bed are causing me a bit of hassle.
The two rear cards right at the back have to curve around towards the rear hatch window.
What have u guys used ?
I've tried hard bored , also tried my preferred ply and where the bend goes I've cut channels down the back of the ply to help in the bending process but not completely happy.
Has anyone used 6mm mdf?
Can u get a bend in it?
Any advice or pics much appreciated

The panels at the back are upper snd lower luggage area cards.
There are early ones and late ones for narrow hatch and large hatch bodies.
The upper ones had metal plates on the back and the lower ones had cups and screws through..
They were made of Mill board which is like a tar impregnated hardboard.
The upper kombi ones were grey and the microbuses were a cream colour....
The lower ones were usually grey..
Hardboard available now is around 4mm to 3.5mm..

If you are either covering them or want something durable that is self coloured, easy to cut and forms without heat etc, I've used 3mm ABS sheet.
Hope this helps.

Hi we trimmed ours out earlier this year and found 3mm Birch Ply was the way to go used it on the head liner and rear curved panels.Bends really easy and was the most flexible ply we have found, but remember when you cut it ,it only bends one way..
Pop down to your nearest timber yard and have a play.
Hope this helps

Used hardboard - made card templates - then cut hardboard - soak in warm bath water and wedge in position, let dry overnight and they retain and do not lose shape.
Covered mine in 3mm foam then same material as side windows/roof liner

Haycocks that looks a great job u done there !
I did try hardboard, tried soaking it with boiling water but it swelled up and fell apart .
Maybe I should have tried cool water.
