Hella semi sealed for lights left hand drive.
Hella semi sealed for lights left hand drive.
by RPATTZ » Wed Mar 16, 2016 11:05 am
I've just fitted two new sets of semi seal hella light units for my 66 kombi where I've got them working fine and just need setting ready for the mot.
The problem is I'm thinking I've might have ordered the wrong lights. The two sets of complete semi seal light units I bought are for a left hand drive bus which mine is. But will this fail the mot ????? I'm worried the light beams will be pointing in the wrong direction.

Just read that I could've bought US spec lights with the glass lenses to UK spec. (Deflection on the lenses???) how can I know this? I noticed that there are arrows on the light lenses when fitting and I I have also heard that you can get tape to use on the light lenses to deflect the beam which I don't really want but if it's a quick option to passing the MOT then it will do for short term.

A US spec has an inner 7" unit inside?
The outer glass is plain?
The inner bulb glass should have a pattern to throw the light to the left hand side. Which way does arrow point?
On most a triangle pattern with the triangle point in the middle and the wide bit on the side the light is deflected
Edit...FROM ... Edit
So the OS on the right looking when sat in the bus..

I'll try and get a pick up shortly. The lights are semi seald units and the glass has the pattern on the outside of it compared to my previous lights which were sealed beam units where the pattern was on the seald beam and the outer glass was just clear.
From quick memory I know the arrows are pointing in different directions as what direction I can't say till I look at the bus later.

Can't get a pick up but if I'm looking directly at the bus, the left hand side light has the the arrow pointing to the left of the bus and the right light has the arrow pointing to the right. Hope it can make some sense.

OK
So I have looked
On my LHD firetruck...the wide edge of the triangle is on the LHS of the lens...
These are OG 1965 lenses.
The lenses I have to replace them are...Modern RHD Hella lenses with the wide side of the triangle pointing to the right

Well...those look like LHD lenses not UK lenses?
Anyone else?
They look like my Fire truck...
?
G
You will pass the MOT by fitting black electrical tape to cover the triangle...as I did on my Fire truck..
LOL

Cheers type21f! Had a feeling I got the wrong ones. Least I have an option of getting through the MOT. I've had a bloody nightmare with these lights. The plan is just get it through MOT and replace them lenses at a later date.
