Fitting steering cushion and clamp set

Fitting steering cushion and clamp set

by presland123 » Sat Mar 19, 2016 7:08 pm
Hi, mot chap wasn't happy with the amount of movement in the column where it passes through the bracket attached to the dash. I see you can get a new steering cushion and clamp, but how big a job is it to fit the new bits?

The steering column clamp and cushion

is bolted up to the underside of the steering column bracket with two bolts going downwards from the steering column bracket and the bracket is in turn bolted up from underneath to the speedo pod.

The cushion is a rubber doughnut which sits on the column tube.

First are you sure all the bolts are present and tight?

The cushion fitting is held to the plate by two chromed/ stainless machine screws screwed downwards one each side of the column. The steering column bracket has slots in it in two directions to allow a little play/adjustment.

I do know the cushion can be a tight sliding fit on the column tube.
Even with a new bush fitted the column has a degree of movement.
The bush is designed to isolate the column tube from the dash and remove vibration travelling up the column.
You may have loose fittings or the clamp and or bush may be missing.
I have stripped two buses down

and we reused the OG bush on bus one and will reuse the bush on bus two.
On bus one we replaced the cushion bracket with a steering lock.

You can see the chromed machine screws holding the clamp sitting in the bracket on either side of the column on this picture

Procedure to replace and or fit clamp should be easy enough although time consuming

Isolate battery
Remove horn push
Remove steering wheel (not easy!)
Remove indicator assembly if needed
Remove grey rubber knee pad from edge of column bracket
Undo bolts either side of column on clamp bracket
Slide clamp bracket and bush down column
Undo column bracket from under speedo
Rotate and missing speedo slide up and off column
Slide clamp and bush upwards or just rubber bush if loose in clamp
Replace clamp on column tube
Replace bush
Slide down column
Replace column bracket and move into position under speedo pod
Fit clamp and bush to column bracket
Slide bracket back up and manoevre to fit to base of speedo
Tighten all bolts
Replace knee protector round edge of column bracket
Refit and adjust indicator
Refit wheel and horn push
Test
Reconnect battery

I think!

That's fantastic step by step guide. Yes, all screws nice and tight. Always been a lot of movement but last years mot man was first to have an issue with it. Will check again though as per your reply and at least if he fails I know how to replace.

Thanks
