Wheels and spacers problems

Wheels and spacers problems

by tomvaughan » Sun May 07, 2017 6:27 pm
I run stock wheels and have a straight axle conversion with spacers. Despite torquing them regularly it's impossible to get them really tight and they have a tendency to work themselves loose.

This has meant one of the wheels especially has some lateral movement and has worn grooves in the wheel bolts. Anyone got any thoughts on what I can do to improve the situation. New bolts and new spacers aside?

Pretty sure you're using the wrong bolts on those wheels mate. Shouldnt they be radius rather than cone.

Hi, original wheels need radius bolts you have taper bolts you can buy washers to convert them.

Thought so. Very dangerous as they sit. Explains why they're working their way loose

Thanks all - I was coming to that conclusion myself after some thought. Will get them swapped straight away

Looking at the drums and wheels, you've done a fair amount of damage there too.... You may find the wheels are beyond use if the surface profile has been worm.

Those taper bolts have be around into the drum, damaging the initial part of the mount. Be very careful after you swap to new bolts that he problem doesn't continue. Oh, and definitely don't re-use those taper bolts with collars. Start with the correct bolts.

New bolts ordered and on the way. Most of the damage seems to be to the spacers underneath rather than the wheel itself, so I may end up getting new spacers too but will obviously keep a close eye once they are swapped.
