If it's got stock pushrods then 6 thou. If steel rods then you can set at 0 gap. Make sure engine is left overnight so stone cold before adjustment.

Hi FB - Going to do my valve clearances in the next couple of months. Do you use sealant or just good quality cork gaskets ? I’ve heard a school of thought to use sealant on the cover side only, due to different expansion rates do the heads and the covers, but would prefer to use gaskets only if I can.

No sealants. Just a gasket, clean heat, good cover and strong bails.

They changed from 0.04 to 0.06 due to the smaller setting causing burnt exhaust valves - particularly on No.3
The factory increased it to 0.06 to give a bit more clearance and tolerance on the valves.
You can run 0.04 but be very careful with frequency of gap checks and note if any keep going tight - this means the valve is stretching.

Why do it then, VW say 0.06
