How do people deal with/fix stripped sump bolt threads?

How do people deal with/fix stripped sump bolt threads?

by Doka Dave » Wed Oct 24, 2018 7:58 pm
Hi all,
been watching oil drip while my bus is standing cold and it appears to be coming though alongside two of the six sump bolts (the little 10mm ones with the brass washers). How can I fix this? The bolts are only supposed to be torqued up lightly but on these two bolts in particular it seems that it won't tighten at all so the thread must be worn and I don't want to strip them and make them worse.
Any tips to fix this issue gratefully appreciated!
Thanks,
DD

Here they are:-

I've used them for engine studs.

Can you not try some loctite on it?

i have threaded a bolt from the inside before and used standard nuts from underneath with some sealant in the past

The studs are available from most of the usual suppliers, if it's the stud rather than the case that's suffered with age then it's an easy replacement next time you change the oil.

WHS ^^^^^^ This is the easiest fix. Simply tap the case holes to M8 and fit the stepped studs. Stronger than helicoils etc. but don't overtighten them!

Hiya Dave

With BJ1 on this one, it's how I got around worn threads - part no. N0144781SS from VW Heritage. Don't forget to pre-drill to 6.8mm before tapping out to M8 though!

Good luck mate,
All the best, Grant

Are the threads on the studs stripped so the nuts won’t do up or are the threads in the block stripped so the stud is pulling from the block? If it’s just the threads on the studs then just pull the stud out with some grips and put a new stud in as that’s better than drilling the block out if you don’t have to.

It's not studs Lee, it's just bolts. The bottom of the sump has six holes, not six studs if you know I mean.
When I go to tighten 2 of the six bolts in order to secure the sump plate on, they just spin with a bit of friction, not tighten. And this is where the oil is leaking past those threads.
Pain in the *** anyway!
Cheers,
