1500 Engine
1500 Engine
by Red Devil » Wed Nov 10, 2004 8:57 pm
I have a feeling that the 1500 engine in my camper is not in the best of health. One of the spark plugs is cross threaded and I can only get it in a couple of turns. Is it ok to run with this in the short term until I can get the engine out (the plug which came out was covered in oil!!!).
My main question is can you get replacement 1500 engines or would I need to think about putting in a 1600 and are there any implications in doing this?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Thanks for the replies. So if I can put a 1600 SP straight in then how much should I expect to pay and do you have any recommendations on where to get one?

There are plenty of places to buy engines from I think it depends on your budget, you have heritage / ssp who supply Remtec engines £745, volkspares £650, if you really can stretch to it, there is laurie petittt who I have heard nothing but good things about, but generally most vw specialists will build supply engines. might be worth going to
http://www.dubdoctors.com/ and finding someone local get a few quotes etc.
and thanks sinclair

Vege units are okay. They are not the cheapest, but they are not the worst.
I paid 850 for a 1600TP. Pulls really well. Very impressed.

had a vege in my old bay that had done 40000 and went like a dream it had about 1/2 of play in crank and more oil leaks than you could shake a stick at but it never let me down and the new owner is still running it my split has the gold in it and it seems strong but time will tell it has supposedly only done 500 miles

I would recommend a Remtec even after my bad experiences, the back up and expertise at Heritage is useful. When my first engine was returned the courier said he’d picked up 6 VEGA lumps recently under warranty. And I met a guy a few months back who was on his third unit!!!
Sometimes it’s best to save your cash and buy a cheep used unit………………did I say I have a 1300tp for sale?
