by 13 window deluxe » Sat Nov 07, 2009 6:40 pm
hi im thinking of fitting a 091 box to the van as i want something stronger than the 1303 bug box that is fitted at the min anyone done this and got any tips? ive measured the box and its slightly longer than the bug box so the engines going to have to move backward slightly, what have you done with the mountings at the nose cone end? cheers in advance

Mine has this mounting at the nose cone end
you will need an engine support bar the other end as it sits further back, like in a bay set up

cheers that looks a tidy install in fact it looks like a standard bay
i assume the axle tube has been been drilled and tapped from the bottom to accept bolts that hold the front mounting clamp on? i already have the rear engine mounting bar at the back as i have the tdi engine in the van cheers for the photo

yeah its been drilled & tapped. The install was done before i got the bus but it had a standard 1600 bay box fitted,i swapped it last year for the 091 to give me better cruising speed, works really well

how did you go on with the 091 box being a bit longer than the 002 box? did you have to move the engine backwards in the van? do you have any idea what driveshaft you have fitted?

No real difference, think if i remember i had to cut 10/12mm off the input shaft on the box & there maybe a slighly bigger gap where the firewall seal is but i filled that in with extra fire foam seal.
Im using everything from a 78 bay set up,driveshafts etc

as the engine support craddle and frame horns have been removed from your van has another cross member been fitted above the box to tie the chassis legs together?

No, theres no bar above the box,it just sits on that support bracket & into engine, which is supported by the bar under the front of the engine, hardly any movement at all when its running, & even with engine out it only drops a little. Its been like that in the 7 yrs ive owned the bus & ive done thousands of miles with no probs

i've fitted the box now and there would be room above the gearbox/under the fuel tank shelf to fit a cradle to use the bay gearbox mounting ears if required
with the gearbox at the correct hight and horizontal the shiftrod comes through the cargo floor about 10mm up
