cargo side inner sill and outer replacement

cargo side inner sill and outer replacement

by messer » Sat Apr 03, 2010 6:50 pm
i have posted about the outer before but was going to start this job today and noticed that the top of the inner sill where the outer should join on to is well gone so plan on replacing both.. I bought the correct fit outer from custom and commercial and plan on buying the inner from there too. Any one got a link to show me how the two fit together and to the cargo floor ? The cargo floor either side of the latch plate so need to do that too!

ignore that, its the sill strengthener that i'm seeing.. I've not done this before so still learning.. Think i weld the strengthener to the outer on the bench and weld the two to the van and plug the outer to the underside of the cargo floor.. Still any pointers appreciated

I did mine ages ago, but I as I recall, yep attach the strengthener to the outer sill and then weld to the bus, Plug weld the bottom of the sill to the inner sill and plug weld the cargo floor.

One other thing I remember is that I had to replace the bottom part of the B post and on the B post replacement there is a bit that goes/ joins inside the new outer sill. So when you cut out the old outer sill go carefully as this may be intact on your B post. have a look on Musclebus website

http://www.musclebus.co.uk/

Go to the B pillar section on the left hand side and then see the top right pic. it has the curved piece that sits in the outer sill.

Hope these pics help, like elliot has said, make sure the latch plate lines up, my panels were autocraft and still needed tweeking, probably more down to the doors though.
I spot welded my sill outer/strengthener together then spot welded the assembly to the inner sill, if you can't get access to a spot welder drill the holes in the inner sill and plug from that side, less tidying up.

I'm looking at the cargo door sill & it's strengthener. Everyone on this thread has fitted the inner strengthener to the outer sill before fitting the combined panel to the van. I can't see how that works....

The lower inner sections of the B & C posts have a shaped sections on them that sit inside the sill. ie the short 2-3" curve shown at the bottom of this photo. These two lips, (one at each end) stop the combined panel sliding in.

Image

If you fit the B&C posts, then offer up the outer sills you can get inside and weld that lip to the outer sill plus weld the curved returns of the sill to the outer curve of the B&C posts on the inside. Then drop the strengthener in behind and weld along the top edge but how do you weld the bottom edge?

The photo below shows the B-post outer skin on and the outer sill ready to go on Leeco10's bus, but there's no inner support section to the B-post at all?

Every thread I've come across shows the strengthener and outer spot welded together first, but you must have to cut away part of the ends of the strengthener to get the combined panel in and leave some joints unwelded....???

To be honest Jim, the klassic fab panel wasn't readily availible when I did mine, so I made my B post, I had nothing there at all, so I had to go on what I could see on friends vans.
I did wonder what the sequence of assembly was for the inner sill, strengthener and outer sill.
In the factory I think the whole side including sill strengthener must have been assembled off the bus, failing that, the inner sill must have be the last bit fitted as otherwise you wouldn't be able to spot the lower edge of sill strengthener.................., unless they had single sided spot welding

Yep, everyone seems to be fitting them combined, but I'd rather get the B&C posts welded to the sill full then fit the strengthener in there without cutting it. Will just have to plug weld it from outside and do the prep' work afterwards.

I know this is an old post, but Jim sums up my exact question so well that I thought I'd reply rather than create a new post.

Did you solve the puzzle Jim? I've bought a Wolfsburg West made sill which already has the strengthener fitted, so don't have the option of fitting the outer sill last.....I'm looking at either removing the tabs which fit inside the sill, or maybe trying to manoevre B & C post repair sections, plus the sill assembly into position as a unit and tack into place.....
