Fast bus owners steering issue
Fast bus owners steering issue
by tufty65 » Thu Aug 19, 2010 8:14 pm
After testing my bus over the last few days I have noticed a slight issue.
When it gets above 90 mph or so the steering wheel goes very 'light' like there isnt anything attached to the end of it
The spindles are relatively new, The tie rods are all top notch the idler pin is fine and there is only a very small amount of play (hardly noticeable, you touch the steering wheel to turn it slightly and the wheels instantly move) which I found is down to the drag link from the steering box arm to the idler arm.
Where the tie rod end screws into the threaded arm there is no clamp to tighten the thread down (like there is on tie rods) and as a result the thread has worn slightly.
Im going to weld this up so it solid to eliminate this very minimal play.
Has anyone any ideas on what it might be ? or is this common on vans that are only designed to do 55 mph
I dont fancy loosing it at the end of the strip !!!

Why on earth would anyone want to let alone try to do 90mph in a 40 year old vehicle designed to do 55-60mph max?
I assume you were in Germany on the derestricted carridgeway whilst carrying out these 'tests'?

Funny the same happens to mine,at around the same speed, manage to hold it up to around 100 then bottle it,must be the air lifting the front(thinking of fitting a removable spoiler for the strip)
I dont like drag racing buses
I LOVE THEM

When my old man use to drag race cars in his youth, they ran ballast in the front to keep the nose down a little more, i use to run a bag of cemment in the Notch as that use to go floaty light
May seem like a weird idea, but it worked and he was on the team that developed the Metro 6R4...and worked on Le Man's They did similar there as well. Although one year they skimmed down the brake discs to save weight
Perhaps lead on the front or the old fashioned B&Q way
