Wiring ------ I'm such a Donkey. Help!!!!!!!

Wiring ------ I'm such a Donkey. Help!!!!!!!

by thescampster » Sat Mar 26, 2011 7:40 pm
Ok
This is what we know as fact.
- I am a dummer .............. FACT
- I have cocked up my wiring.
- What was working fine is now not working fine.
- I have blown 10+ fuses in an attempt to fix my wiring.
- My attempts to fix it so far have mainly consisted of just putting another fuse in the fuse box. Hence 10+ plus fuses blown.
- I disconnected my speedo and fuel gauge to respray my dash.
-Didn't touch any wires on the fuse box. HONEST

Facts that may help a little more

- Peter Good loom. Top notch LHD
- Im sure I've connected up speedo and fuel gauge correctly( I drew a diagram of wires)
- I may have messed with the light switch but honestly can't remember but thought I'd left it alone. Ya I know. DONKEY

The Problem
- Turn on lights and no lights on the right hand side.
- Bulbs ok in light.
- Turn on lights and fuel sender goes all the way over.
-Turn on ignition and blow a fuse.(second one in from the right)
- Main beam flash don't work.
- Engine starts up.
- No indicators

- I'VE NO IDEA

Is it the light switch I may have moved wires on.

Answers on a postcard or post

And o ya top weekend to have a problem as everyone at Volksword Show.

Desperate to get it back on the road as I've planned camping weekend at Whitby over the Royal Wedding weekend.

Cheers me dears in advance.

Just remembered about 2weeks ago I had a flat battery and had jump leads on the van and ................. Put them on the wrong way round. I know. I'm not fit to have a van. Didnt notice at time if that knocked out anything. But the earth lead did get a tad warm. Could I have melted a wire I can't see ?

Cheers lucky............. And now is the time to find a sparky in Sheffield as I've no idea what to do with a meter. Happy to buy one. Never need an excuse to buy a gadget but need it fixed ASAP for camping weekend.

Could it be faulty relay switches?

You have a short & the connection between the fuel gauge & light switch is strange - sounds like you might have melted the insulation between 2 or more wires. Doesn't sound like there's a simple solution - you need a local auto-electrician. Try Googling? Don't know whether Yellow Pages still exist?

If you do decide to look any further on your own, i thoroughly recommend these to anyone that messes with cars.
They are far easier than a multimeter 8)

The red one can test for both positives and negatives feeds, along with the function of actually being able to apply a pos or neg feed to a circuit to see if it works, and there's a reset fuse for when you get it wrong.
Just hook 2 crocodile clips to your battery and start testing. Simplez

The black one does the same but has led lights in the end and can test for continuity with a simple buzzer built in.

Wiring is not too difficult. wait till a nice quiet sunday morning, make yourself a brew and armed with a colour wiring diagram off the samba you should be able to work through it, no need for any guessing. And get yourself a multimeter and teach yourself how to use it. It's not difficult

Took the day off work yesterday and made a little progress. Found a short in the front lights. And got most things working again. Just the petrol gauge issue to sort out. O ya and one back side light that's being an arse and not working. But at it again this weekend. Thanks for advice and offers of help.
I'm still a donkey though.
