Headlight assembly help

by bex88 » Mon Jan 06, 2014 9:41 am
Just restored some headlights but I am struggling to work out how all the clips go that hold on the chrome surround and headlight. Help or a picture of the back of a assembled light would really help. Thanks

Words...
The clip is like a long legged L shape with a crease in the base...

You have three major components, the bucket

with the reflector and the screws attached and the glass and seal and the chrome surround.

The technique of fitting them is that the short end of the L clips under the crome rim and the crease in the short end goes onto the edge of the headlight bulb grey bucket, then the long end clips under the edge of the chrome surround. There should be seven clips per headlight evenly spaced.
There are two sorts, older hella long clips and modern hella short ones. Despite my missgivings I have discovered that the modern ones do fit...I just wanted them all to be the same.
You can re-use them off old headlights but they are spring steel and break..
Off to look for pictures...

I have set of OG headlamps stuck in boxes in my garage - (off a 66) I fitted a brand new Hella set as my reflectors were poor.... straight swap out, so these are untouched!
So just went and took a couple of quick snaps for you.

Hope these pics help - if you need any more detailed ones just ask 8)

Sorry to jump on this thread but I'm struggling to re-assemble my headlights after fitting RHD sealed beams

I've got the this surround clipped in ok but its the way that surround and leans then fit into the larger surround. (sorry I'm not sure of correct names)

It doesn't seem to bolt or screw in so in my eyes will come loose?

Should have taken more notice when I removed them but I don't think I've lost any bolts over the last few days!

Do you have a picture as I don't really get what you mean. :?:
Do you mean the headlight pivots in the rim? If so do you have the adjusters fitted and fitted correctly. They are like a prong on a long screw and the screws go one in each side, top on one side and bottom on the other. The prongs stick into a small bit of rubber that's jammed in the bucket - you can just see one of them on a previous picture. Without them the lens will move all over the place inside the bucket. You tighten the screws from the outside until they hold the lens in place then use them to adjust the beam height.

Cheers, Lee.

£2.50 for a sprig of steel! Yet another example of "scene tax"!

Yes that's exactly what I was trying to say :) I was also struggling to get the whole lot back together but that's done now.

The adjusters don't work though as the little black rubbers are shot! is it possible to buy these?

Nice one Mark :) I'm fairly sure that I've got about 3 of the spring clips plus a bit of bent coat hanger on each light plus no spacer on the retaining screw  Might have to treat the old girl to some bits when I next take 'em out. At the moment though they're working fine so I'm gonna leave well alone
