I've often thought that most bus owners worse fears are a front end crash and it's puzzled me for a while that someone hasn't made a bolt in section that just wraps around the front and comes back to mount on the wheel tubs.
Saw an orange Scooby powered split at the pod once who'd done just this, it was simple and effective.
Can't wait to see the build

Ta dude, im the worst for being sarcy so always think others are too!
If I were to design something similar to.what youve described, do you think there would be demand from folks? It wouldnt be simple as the heater tube is right in the way, but coukd be done!

Sort of that....
That's pretty trick! I hope your good at angles and measuring
That looks almost legal for regs I'd say anyway, the only thing obvious that wouldn't be legal is the access to the front seats as this would need a bar that traverses at your shoulder height but as it's for looks/non regs it doesn't matter
I'd would also add a cross member above the windscreen like this
I would still be inclined to make it from CDS or cro-mo for strength though.
It should be Ok I hope, and Im sure there will be a few mistakes and bits of CDS thrown away as I learn but it cant be that hard surely with the right tools?!?
I will include the bar above the windows too, thanks for that idea!
It will be made from 45mm CDS with a 3.2mm wall (frok memory).

Mrs Empi constantly asks about a front cage and even more so now we have little Empi up front. I'm thinking some thing like the drawing but with a top bar across the top off the screens ( I noticed it too) and then either tied into door bars which mount to the bulkhead behind the cab seats or come down the cab side of the B post and tie into where the seatbelt mounts would be then have a bolt in door bar. I noticed that the safety devices cages are a smaller diameter tubing and wondered if this would be better to make it out of whatever they're made from as it's less obtrusive.
I wonder how much it would cost to get just the cab section on the drawing made up and fitted but with a bar across the top of the cab?
One thing I've always wondered though was how do they do all the welding without frazzling all the interior and interior trim etc
Cheers, Lee.
Thanks dude, I might design a bolt in solution as stated above to solve the issue once and for all.

Many thanks for posting your ideas.
I have looked into cages but mostly the front section. and she will not except door bars or a visable cage
the chance of actualy rolling I hope is very slim but a front end smash or a rear end shunt into something worries me.
One thought I had was to use a origional bumper as a fake cover for a large section tube and tie this back to a frame under the cab which picks up on several points on the chasie to spread the load. I understand that the bumper and it irons bend to absorbe the impact but if that force can be transfured to behind the front compartment?
just a thought...

If the van is stamdard height then to be honest the bumper would do a reasonable job of distributing the impact to a safe area as its attached to the chassis rail ends, so adding tubes to move the forces back probably wouodnt be all that advantageous.
If on the other hand you are running a lowered van, then the bumper is usually below the area most cars would impact, so the weakest part of the van (the front panel, then your legs) would hit the strongest part of their vehicle (designed for impact protection) and hey Ho, you no longer have much below the knee. Thats why its necessary to have the tubes on show really, as they need to protect this area and without tieing them into the chassis or the wheel housings via a small door bar, they would be useless, its one of those function over form quandaries!!
My wife hates roll cages usually, but we have three kids in the back, and both my wife amd I like our legs so its a necessary evil.

Tufty, I think your bus with the cage looks great.
How mad does it feel when driving your bus that's that quick it requires a roll cage? My 4rse would be twitching!!
I can understand Wejjy wanting to install one for safety & family reasons, but to have a bus quick enough to need one would make brown stuff leak out my trouser leg (I know, what a wimp I am, and the older I get the worse I get ).
Respect for doing what you have done.

How about if it does both, takes the family out safely and makes you mess yourself.

Cheers dude
It does make me 'feel' safer but I'm not sure if that's a good thing! I know it's definitely got 13s 1/4 mile in there and poss 12s now it's got a new nitrous set up so getting over 100mph top end speed it was kind of a no brainer.

It's great fun flooring it and to be honest the turbo does enough to scare me but with the nitrous on top for more power it's a beast when it's on full chat
