Fitting seat belts in a Split screen bus.

Re: Fitting seat belts in a Split screen bus.

I'm having a 3 point inertia and a lap-belt fitted for the rear facing seat of my '66 camper. Any advice on where to anchor the "buckle" bit? I've been advised that the best way is to install a "frame" and attach the bits to this. How have other people dealt with this?

Cheers

Just installed a seat belt mount in my B piller so thought Id share it on here.
Stared by finding the best place to cut a hole big enough for the mount plate to fit.
Decided on the back face of the B pillar half way down under the side panels.
I should of cut the hole a little higher or lower because of the cab door strike plate attachment on the other side got in the way.
Image

I trimmed the sides of the plate so it would fit better inside the pillar, attached a piece of wire top and bottom to help me guide it up the inside,
Image

pulling the wire up through the top hole I drilled earlier. I then fiddled to get the plate flat and held in place with a magnet so I could fit the bolt to hold the platefirm for welding.
Image

The plate was cleaned of galvanised plating where the weld hole were, then mig welded and once ground down flat the anchor point is installed. easy..........
Image
still not sure what to do about the hole in the bottom of the pillar yet though. :?:

dont think the hight is specfied in the MOT test.Just if they are fitted they have to work. Mine use to be bolted to the top of the bulk head. I chose the height on the B pillar from just above where my sholder would be.

VW Technical Bulletin Z 14 gives dimensions for where VW used to fit them as optional fitments.
The MOT manual has no specification...

Here's how I made a support for a rear seat belt

I cut a 25mm thick block in a band saw with the curve of the inner skin that I got from a template made from cardboard.
I squashed a sheet on 1mm steel held together in a vice and with G clamps
with a bit of heat along its length I bent over both sides
Image

With the steel still bent over the block I marked a line for the thickness and used the convect part to bend back the sides, again with a bit of heat
Image

Did this twice
Image

I trimmed the sides to 12mm cut the top to shape the roof seam and cut the bottom to profile the lower side panels
I welded the seat belt mounts inside at the same height as I had fitted the front mounts.
Image

Painted the inside then decided to fit some lower mounts points as I did not know yet the best place for the reel and would not be able to weld them in once fitted.
Image

because my bus is going for paint I spot welded them in place with a seam weld around the top and bottom. this will knacker any existing paint.
Image Image

Here's a better picture of its position, Ill take another when I get it back from paint.

I stole a few pictures from the forum for my blog and more info here

I want to fit belts to the front of my Mar 60, (bench seat with bulkhead). It happens To have pillar plates welded in, a little crudely, but OK.

Two questions, do the drill holes for lapbelts fall in the same place as for 3 point belts? I have a set of new WWest lap belts, which I might use - simply because I have them spare.

Can someone advise where to drill the lower holes? Better still post or pm me some pictures of theirs

Ok its an old thread, but I have been looking through so many and the pictures I want always seem to be the ones that have been removed!

Many thanks
