My cue eh! .There was a slight difference in o.d and i.d in the shafts so they was turned down slightly and sleeved within each other as best as possible, then i 'V' the ends,a route run weld done then a capped weave weld over the top.Keeping it all in line is the key as it has to run inside the outer tube.Personally i think drilling and pinning will create a weak spot and maybe cause a place for a fracture to start from.

nice work
would you need all the same parts for a rhd setup?
could you find a suplier of the self centred bearing - or a spec so one could be sourced? as we know it works

yes i certainly sits much higher than the og steering box, i would say its still one of the lowest parts though, i reakon if you cut the chassis you could gain another couple of inch's on top of what i,ve done

i just wanted to add, wiring wise i have ran the pump feed straight from the battery via a 30amp fuse and a 30amp relay slaved off the alternator light so the pump only runs when the engine is running and not when the ignition is just turned on

well got the small litle jobs done underneath today and took it for a test drive, wow.... its responsive, very light,no wandering at all, steering returns fully after cornering, everything i expected and better really, as for turning round and parking its a plesure..... so the parts used are
astra mk3 pas rack £50 ebay
pug 106 pump £35 ebay
braided pipe with m18 and m16 ends £40 bgc motorsport
20mm pillar block self centreing bearing free from work!
mk1 golf steering uj £20 ebay
t25 bevel box £30 ebay
20x20 box, 10mm flat bar, ect ect £10
so £185 and a couple of days work and i have a split with power steering with thanks to steve ( 686busboy) for his welding, here,s a few more photos of it
this is awesome, massive thanks for posting this up. i have been looking into this for a while now (alot better then the creative setup) but now is clearly speeled out for us, cheers.
just a couple of questions
do you have caster on your beam? or is the new rack responsible for the "steering returns fully after cornering"?
how is the astra rack connected to the beam/bus?
might give you and steve a call nearer the time im ready to fit if thats cool.

do you reckon its worth useing power assisted steering or will normal rack be ok
i was going to go with normal rack but now im wondering shold i go for power assisted
does it adjust and get stiffer as you go faster

all the stuff i have read on other sites, thesamba for example, say why bother with power because the r+p makes it awesome on its own. But the way i see it is why not have power if your going the vauxhal route? we now know it only need cost an extra £40 or so.
There must be a reason that virtually all new cars are power assisted.
