when you turn the rack upsidedown Does the rack not reverse direction so a left han drive rack would be the right way up no good on R H drive as the box reverses the steering to start with?

the reason i had to mount off centre is the pas rack has an extra part sticking out one side which would of caught on the hub, to be honnest it does turn further one way than the other but it still has more lock than a stock bus so not to fussed about that, not drivin on the motorway yet as i,m a long way from one but took it for a reasonble drive and wound it up to 75mph and it felt perfect, as for using the rhd rack on a left hand bus, try finding a lhd pas rack! that is the reason, after drivin the bus last week i can say its the best thing i,ve done to it,

thanks for the reply i know what you mean about the end of the rack sticking out of the chassis rail to centralise the rack the rhd van i did with my mate was like that but we measured up on full lock and it all seemed ok i was originally going to use a saxo pas rack as there centre mount track rods as well and theres millions on ebay for next to nothing pas and non pas but the rack bar end cover stuck out even further so i ditched it in favour of the vauxhall rack
as for the supply of lhd racks i just looked on ebay germany found 5 pas models selected a gsi one for better steering weighting and bought it buy it now it ended up costing £48 to the front door rack and carraige this was about 6 months since so that could have gone up a little now due to the crap pound
but still not bad? how heavy is the steering compared to a lowered steering box van?

I can jump in here and add my thoughts,i have driven Al's bus since this conversion and its a completely different experience, more confident inspiring and not so knackering to drive as you dont have to battle with it and concentrate so much keeping it in a straight line.As for ease it's great, especially when slow manouvering/parking! I will certainly be going down this route when i get round to it on my project bus.

Found a source for the correct material to produce new steering columns, and the machinist, he says yes. So this will save having to use vw steering columns as a donor.

id be interested in that
i may want one longet than std tho cos at the mo i have trouble getting my lanky legs under the wheel - mind you the seats i have are welded in!
got old ones to retro fit so it may change
would they be a 'propper' length or long so you can cut to length?
i guess you would only be machining one end? and the other would be blank for what ever fitting you wanted to fix there yourself?

That's what I was thinking. And basically make them as long as possible to efficiently use up the stock lengths of rod, then anyone would have the flexibility to use them on any type of conversion.

They're splined both ends from what I can see, so no good for splitty steering wheels. Oh, and solid so no way to run the horn cable through them... Unless I'm missing something there. Also, they're from $43 to $73 so into £ plus shipping plus import duties etc. they'd be more than £30 I guess.
