IRS Conversion questions

IRS Conversion questions

by turkishgreen26 » Thu Feb 26, 2015 11:34 am
I am starting to collect the parts for an IRS conversion. So far I have an AH code gearbox, 1303 A arms, 1303 drive shafts and 1303 brakes.

In my simple head these should all fit along with a bolt together conversion kit.( I am looking at Bus Boys)

Do I have to modify the A arms in any way ?

Are the drive shafts suitable?

My plan would be to use the brakes with new drums( 5x130 from M7). I have CSP disks on the front and plan to fit a servo. Will these be suitable?

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

Gavin

Would recommend Boxwagen kit if you haven't yet looked at it.

The Boxwagen kit is good, but not compatible with the parts you're collecting.

The axles will be okay with some kits like the German BugBox kit, but not all kits, as some use spacers and OG axles, others use no spacers and aftermarket axles.

Yes, the brake option you mention is all fine.

Thanks for the replies. Jim do you know who sells the bug box kit? As I can't seem to find anyone who sells it under that name. Gavin

Bug Box, direct from Germany. They will ship direct to you, I've imported a few sets to use in the past. It's a nicely made kit with features you don't get with other setups.

Hi Turkishgreen26,

I have not long bought a bus with the BugBox kit fitted - it wasn't done very well, so I've dismantled it all & rebuilt it, so got a fair idea of how the set up all works now (with a fair bit of advice from VWJim & Wastedspark !!).

I am only in Solihull so you are welcome to come round & have a look at mine & I can run you through the bits.

Cheers

I'm in the middle of a boxwagon kit as recommended on here and it is really simple to do. It's all the other bits you will encounter that are a pain.

They have a list of bits you need easy to follow instructions and the guy who owns it is really helpful.

Having looked at the Boxwagen kit, is it early bay parts rather than type 1 ?

Boxwagen IRS is Bay, so you're restricted to brakes designed for Bays.

that's basically the same kit as mine mate, other than the brackets - goveng is Transporterhaus - I've got his adjustable springplates and spacers - the same as he provides in his full kit, the only difference is that my brackets are Bugbox, but I suppose his are essentially the same - should be around Saturday if you want to have a butchers at my set up.

Ernie, I will PM you later in the week. Saturday would be brilliant thanks.

Jim. I take it, the Bugbox kit is a better quality and fit for the extra £150. My german isn't brilliant, but should I be looking at the kit with adjustable springplates for drum brakes?
