The age and spec of my 1962 van

The age and spec of my 1962 van

by Taffy » Mon Mar 16, 2015 5:43 pm
I have a 1962 van - chasis number 5090651. TheV5 states that it was first registered in January 1962 whereas the Samba listing suggest Aug / Sep 1959. Can this inconsistency be explained ?
Also the front seat is a 1/3rd 2/3rd whereas I'm let to believe that pre 63 should be a bench seat - any thoughts ?
Once I've ascertained the age if the van I'd like to reinstate the the interior so need to know whether to put a bench seat I or should I stick with what I've got.
Thanks in advance.

Lots of detective work needed to check..
where is the VIN number you quote?

On the body or on the plates?

Thesamba.com link... shows you where to look..
So first of all confirm where you are looking...

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/id.php

Remenber the VIN is the build date...no relationship to when it was registered..
My March 1962 has a hump bench seat...but by September 1962 it changed to 1963MY with 1/3 2/3 seats...

describe the features you have, inward facing engine louvres...outward facing louvres...LHD RHD lip on rear wheel arch or not..
Recessed or flush ice pick handles..
Bullet indicators or fried eggs
Semaphores describe away

It's a RHD vehicle which originated from Indonesia.
The chasis number is stamped into the body to the right of the engine at an angle.
The indicators are fried egg type but round not fish eye.
The louvred are inward facing.
There is a lip on the rear wheel arch.
I don't think they are ice pick handles. The handles are if ed at both ends and have a button which you press. There is an I tend anion in the door pNrk beneath the handle.

Wide hatch I think - if that's the later of the two - same size as my old 66 bus

Take a rubbing with a pencil of the stamping sounds like there is an error on your V5. ...
Sounds like it might be a 1962 but a 1963 MY bus to me...

The body is 64MY earliest from the description. The chassis number may not be though. I saw some funny things when I was in Indonesia ;)
