Headlight issues 1967 splitscreen microbus

Headlight issues 1967 splitscreen microbus

by 1deaky1969 » Fri Mar 18, 2016 12:47 pm
Hi

Could I please take advice on an issue following an MOT failure?

I have an intermittent issue with the headlights on my bus. I have a two position dash mounted dimmable headlight switch. My van is 12v ( I believe from standard ). If I pull the dashboard switch fully into the second position, I am sometimes unable to get dipped beam. When this occurs, only the sidelights are illuminated. At this point I also cannot get full beam to stay on ( full beam works if I keep the steering column stalk pulled as if I am flashing the lights ). If I continue to pull the stalk until such time that main beam stays on, I am then able to get dipped beam successfully from this position again by pulling the steering column lever normally

I am wondering if it is likely to be a sticking relay rather than a faulty switch?

I would appreciate any thoughts as I am a novice at anything electrical!

Kind Regards
Paul

Hi Paul,

More than likely a dirty switch.

They are very basic inside and easily repairable with some emery cloth and contact cleaner.

Just drill out the two rivets holding the cover over the switch.

Far better to use an original than a repro.

Hi Deaky,

The relays are very easy to take apart too - see my previous repair thread here:

https://archives.ssvc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=107594&p=815048&hilit=relay#p815048

I had a relay issue with main beams - and fixed up the relay.

Nick / Ted Thank you both for replying to this thread

I have ordered a replacement relay, however I had not even considered reconditioning what I already have.

I will certainly follow both sets of advice

Nick

Just to elaborate on my original post
In order to temporarily "sort" my issue, I do not touch the switch once I have pulled it out tonics full extent.
I manage to toggle the column lever only to sort.

Is it still possible that a dirty switch could be the source of my issue

Thanks again
Deaks
