Phosphoric Acid

Phosphoric Acid

by mjknight71 » Tue Mar 22, 2016 3:31 pm
I have previously used phosphoric acid as a rust cleaner (proper acid not a automotive contains phosphoric....but makes the drive fizz acid) but my supplier can no longer obtain it for me.

I can buy 85% off ebay.....anyone done this? Any good? £20 for 5l....

Or you can get agricultural cleaner like this http://www.kilco.co.uk/products/dairy-h ... d-cleaner/ anyone any experience?

Comments advice ideas please

:D

So what does it do? I have a bit of surface rust and corrosion from using my bus in the wet & salt, would this get rid of that from steel & aluminium etc?

It's basically metal prep, or the active ingredient of rust converters. If you apply it, let it work and scrub off the black coating, you can use it to remove rust, but there are probably more efficient ways of doing so. If you apply it and leave the black coating, that coating acts as a rust inhibitor - it's ferric phosphate.

It helps to mix it in to a gel e.g. by adding wallpaper paste, but that gets messy.

My guess is that the metal ready and fertan have as an active ingredient phosphoric acid. But it will be diluted and brand named expensive. Jenolite is the same low strength branded but I can get 5 litres of 85% phosphoric acid for £20.

The stuff I have used previously cleaned up rust wonderfully.....apparently you can heat the acid and it works even better 8O but that is way too dodgy for me :blackeye: :blackeye:

Yes....
True...
But you do not need to be know any incantations to use..
Full strength acid csn be a dangerous liquid...Under inexperience hands..
You need to have access to eye of toad snd tail of newt to make the correct potion....
Same problem buying many of the full strength chemicals..
Restrictions to avoid free sale..
Whereas the diluted versions at safe to use strength you can buy..
