Late type 2 gearbox in a split

Late type 2 gearbox in a split

by Scousey12 » Tue Oct 04, 2016 1:37 pm
Hi does anyone know if I can put a 6 rib 2.0 late bay gearbox in a split. Reason being I have a 2.0 type 4 motor mated to a type 3 auto at the mo. Im aware I can place a type 1 in by changing the nosecone..im not sure if the same can be done with the 2.0 6 rib box.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Regards
Darren.

I'm running the 091 6 rib in mine, awesome box. My bus had a standard 1600 bay box fitted when i got it,lots of work by the looks of it to make a bay box fit. I swapped it over for the 091 was an easy swap lol. Makes engine sit a little further towards the back of the bus,not much clearance on the valance, plus not much wheel clearance on arches as driveshafts are longer too. I run a slightly narrower tyre which gives me an extra 10mm clearance.

Mine wasn't that bad to fit but I kept the engine in the original position so had to trim the rear bulkhead to get it to fit, had to do that anyway as its a vertigate box.
Made up some templates for the mounts too so it all fitted with CE irs set up.

What are the benefits of these later boxes? I often hear people going on about the 6 rib box.... But don't know what big deal is?

For me i have it for better cruising speed, im running a 1776,twin dells so quite small engine, but im able to sit on 70mph on motorway at approx 3000rpms, think most people pair the box to larger engines as they are a strong box & can take the extra cc's ok

Higher gearing and they'll take a bit more abuse. Sand rail folk love them.

They may be taller gearing than an early bay box, but they are a lot shorter geared than a bug box. They are a lot stronger though. Unless your bus is already butchered, I wouldn't bother putting one in

They have the strongest ring and pinions VW made for gearboxes and the case itself is strong so great for a base for drag/race purposes.
